I'm a student up at Sam Houston State University, and I was wondering if anyone knows of any good bank fishing spots around town?? Some small ponds or something that are easily accessible.
Thanks!!

If you have any transportation you need to make it out to Huntsville State Park - Lake Raven has some good Bass and Sunfish - They used to rent canoes and paddle boats and you can fish out of them (I don't know if they still do but there is a fishing pier and some pretty good bank fishing areas - A fishing license is not required there either.

Lake Raven at Huntsville State Park is the way to go. I graduated from Sam Houston as well and spent most of my fishing time at the state park. Buy the year pass and have fun; good crappie and bass fishing. My freshman year I would bank fish or rent a canoe then I purchase a small kayak and had a blast. Have fun

+1 on Raven. I fish it several times a year. It's a fun bass lake just watch out for the gators. There's some bigguns in there.

Watch out for Gators at the state park! I saw a couple last year around 6-8ft hanging around close to the bank

Have you tried Elkins Lake? My parents live there and I am an SHSU alumni, so I used to hit it up all the time with great results. I live in Austin now, and my parents always wondered why I visit them so much, and I think theyre catching on when I pull up to the house with my 'yak fihing gear.

just a couple miles outside of Huntsville in Elkins Lake Subdivision. Right across the highway from the Sam Houston statue and about a mile or two north of Huntsville State Park, on the same side as Hwy 45. Dont worry, theres no security guards there so you can drive in the subdivision and head to the big swimming pool and right there, they have pier, along with being able to walk the banks.

Youre very welcome! When you pull into the suddivison go all the way straight and youll run into the Country Club. Turn left and taht will take you to the pool on teh right. Good luck. I used to tear it up but havnt fished there lately. Theres another smaller lake farther down and thats where my parents live, so I fish that one more, but the main lake should be better. let me know how you do. Im sure i'll be back there in a couple weeks.

The gators at Raven, a fine fishery, are nothing to worry about. In the summer, there are hundreds of clumsy, helpless, flailing children going slap nuts in the water at the swimming beach. They drip "easy prey" from every pore. I've never heard of a problem there.

Drunk rednecks, though......that's another story.

Don't stand in the water with chicken legs tied around your ankles and you'll be just fine. And, that warning concerns not just dealing with gators, but the rednecks too.
