Well, after slaughtering the sandies, we fished for cats. I netted some fresh shad for me and a Buddy while my brother tried the Danny King's Cheese stuff I had.

Me and the buddy caught a few quick channel kittes and here is the good news! My brother kept catching the larger cats and they were all BLUES! Not one blue was caught on the shad and not one channel was caught on the shad! Anyone else experienced this?

Let me see if I get this straight Tom?

"Not one blue was caught on the shad and not one channel was caught on the shad! Anyone else experienced this?"..Tomp

If your brother was catching all the blues and channels with the punch bait, what kinda kitties were you and the buddy catching on shad? Bullheads or Ops??

Well, I thought I worded it correctly. I'll try again....

ALL of the channels were caught on the shad! ALL of the Blues were caught on the Danny King's and they were bigger too!

Tom, I would believe the only way someone might could provide you and answer would be to know exactly what the structure you was fishing in looked like?? Even then it would be a shot in the dark at best.

For example, last year my partner and I was setting with the boat anchored right on a substantial drop off. We had chummed a big sandy, rock filled shallow earlier that day, and when we came in after doing some line side fishing, the big healthy channels were waiting for us. The bite began immediately and went on, and on, and on. Nothing less than about three pounds, and nothing larger than about five. But, one right behind the other as fast as we could bait and get back in the water.

But, my buddy got bored by the time we had caught all we wanted to dress, and were just catching some for the fun of it. He said, "I'm going to pitch out this side of the boat", which was the deep water side. He almost immediately tied into about a ten pound blue.

Same bait, just different area and depth???

I don't know Mike, I thought it could have been the baits. I will try it again next time....

Tom is always so good at stirring this kind of contreversy.

I use punch bait dang near exclusively, so I don't have a whole lot to compare to other types of baits. But, the reason I posed the structure question is:

On up in the summer when I begin night fishing on shallow sandy flats in open water, I full well expect to catch an almost equal mix of blues and channels.

But, for now I am typically fishing tight shallow cover.

With the exception of that 27lb blue I picked up on a shallow main lake point a month ago, I haven't caught a blue all year. I have caught nothing but channel kitties. And, that was the only blue any of the three of us caught that whole day.

My point, and likely more of a curiosity. Reckon the structure each of us are choosing to fish, perhaps even the time of day, might have more to do with the breed of cat than the bait??

Because, I think we can all agree, both species of kitties will eat plenty of shad or punch bait when presented in the right locations!

Same experience here MikeC, friend caught two 8 pound blue cats fishing port side of boat near the dropoff and I loaded up on channel cats and never hit a blue. I didn't bait the spot, I just know the lake well enough to be able to find the fish based on the wind direction (water currents).
