Just spent three days fishing on lake Conroe. We caught 51 keepers, the largest going 22.4 lbs( released). Now, the surprise, all caught on hot dog weiners soaked in garlic and salt.

Maybe I need to change my bait to hot dogs. I have been fishing Conroe every weekend for the past month and have nothing to show for it. There are a couple of places I have been going to for a couple of years that always produced (not large numbers but good fish). Here lately nothing.Congrat's on the 51 and the big one turned back.

Chad, caught them on juglines in 15-20 feet of water around the stumps north of 1097. We cut them in about 3 inch pieces, added garlic powder, salt, and a little cooking oil. The advantage of weiners over beef hearts, liver, etc. is that they do not rot on your line in hot water. This was the first time I have used them and I must admit I was surprised. We had several jugs baited with shad and had no luck on them.

Bigga, As far as bank fishing I do see alot of people fishing off of the rocks on the 1097 bridge. I would suggest trying it out before you take the wife and mother.

Divingcat , tell us a little more about the weinee bait prep, please. I assume "beef" weinees? How long do you soak them? Garlic or garlic salt? vanilla too? When do you add the oil?

This sounds like a good clean, cheap, and easily prepared bait. Let us in on the fine points of prep.

When you are jugging, do you leave the jugs and return later or do you stay with them? I use one railroad tie and try to put it on bottom with two hooks, one about 6 inches off the bottom, the other about three feet off the bottom. Others have said that they use three railroad ties for weight. Please describe your rig.

I want to use your advice and bait at Choke Canyon, but as you know, I love to fish the stumps at Conroe when I can get the time and $$$ to pull my boat 4 hours.

Cheap weiners from Krogers. Cut in 1 to 2 inch pieces, add salt and about half a cup of cooking oil.Add enough garlic powder to give it a strong garlic smell. I fish the northern end during the summer around 20 ft of water and use 4 hooks per jug.

Talked with a guide on Lake Conroe today and he said they had a little rain. Every little bit helps. He did say the catfishing was very good.

ts, I have never tried it but I would assume that it would be okay. This past trip was the first time I had ever used them on juglines. Heck, I might try them on rod and reel fishing next time I go out. They do seem to catch more blues than channel cats.

divingcat, I used the oily, garlic weinees on jugs at Choke yesterday about 20-30 ft deep. Caught three small blues. I am going to try the weinees today on R&R at Calaveras. Will let you know.

ts, I tried the hot dog weiner bait on rod&reel and I caught 1 17" channel. I actually did better with stink bait. I have to admitt that the hot dog weiner bait so far has been the best smelling bait I have used.

Like I said, I have used the weiners only once and had very good luck. I talked with a friend that used them on juglines on Conroe this week and he caught fish. However, he used chicken liver and stinkbait on rod and reel and did really well on small cats. It seems that it would be a good idea to mix baits, such as shad, beef hearts, weiners, etc. on juglines.

Live DivingCat says, mix up the baits. I got a few nibbles on the weinees today at Cally, but I would put it 6th on the menu. Worms, shrimp, live bait, Marvs, Chicken liver, and weinees, in that order. I still like the weinees for jugging.
