Hello my name is Todd and I was very lucky to receive two fly rods for Christmas one was from my father the other one from my wife. I really enjoy both of them even though I haven't fished with them yet just casted in my backyard and I really like the Sage my wife got me. I don't have the heart to tell my dad because he was so excited giving me this rod so I can't ask him for the receipt to return it. I will be selling this rod for $675 which is $100 off retail price at the Orvis shop. I have never fished with this rod just casted in my backyard. It's brand new with the warranty card still not filled out to be sent into Orvis. Orvis ZG Helios 905-4 Mid Flex 6.5 Thanks, Todd

Thanks for posting Todd. So what are the specs on that Sage? If you work things around you could have two sweet fly rods for very different angling scenes.

I'm at once joking and serious when I say that only one fly rod is like having only one pair of shoes; not very practical.

Man, I would get that receipt and trade it in for a different weight...you could definitely have a couple of sweet setups.

Yes I have two really good fly rods but I'm leaning towards the Sage, I think each rod has it's differences but I believe the Sage fits me better.

Sage TCX Series / 590-4 TCX. They are both unbelievable rods and would love to keep both of them but I have no purpose for 2 5wt rods especially high end ones like these. They scare me.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Well I can appreciate not wanting two 5 weights.
So here's a question: what sorts of fly fishing are you most interested in?

I guess what we're saying is that if you played your cards right you could end up with sweet rods for a couple of different types of fishing...maybe keep the Sage 5 wt and trade the Helios in for a 3 wt or 7wt, etc. Whatever suits your style.

Okay let me clarify I'm not needing that rod, I have a 3wt, now two 5 wt's, one 6wt, one 8wt, and one 12wt. As you can see I don't need another rod. I posted that rod on here first to see if anyone was interested locally before I went out to Ebay and on Craigslist.

I know there are more than a few of us who've cast a fly rod at a shop or at a meeting and thought "wow, this rod feels great." However, when we fished with the rod we were left with a different feeling, like "this rod has no feel, or doesn't set the hook well, or simply doesn't pick the line off the water as easily as I think it should." I'd say fish with both rods, for at least an hour (start with the sage as it's your favorite) and see if your mind changes.

As for having too many rods, I don't think that's possible... it's also nice to have a back-up rod/reel of the same weight in case something happens to yours or a fishing partner's on a trip.

Congrats on receiving awesome presents from people you hold dear.

Michael

Todd,

I see where you're coming from now and do appreciate offering it here first.
Of course I'm a Tackle Anonymous dropout. Hence my previous posts smile

Good luck with the rod sale and post some fishing pix soon.

Methinks such a remark should be moderated.

Or you could be like me, Mr. Never Met a Rod I Didn't Like. It's an expensive name to live up to.

The five weights you describe are both very light and pretty fast. The TCXs (the latest version of what Sage used to call TCRs or Tournament Casting Rods) are noted for being very fast and casting best with one line size heavier than the rod weight. The Helios at a 6.5 flex, is described as moderately fast, though I think most Helios rods feel faster than other medium action rods.

I have a Helios rod similar to yours and a four weight version of the TCX, so I have done a similar casting comparison. You could argue that they give you different capabilities. But if you prefer one over the other, and don't want to keep them both, sell one.

Most of us do not understand that sort of logic, but then that's why we're chatting back and forth on a fly fishing website rather than making productive citizens of ourselves. We are afflicted. No getting around it.

Hey! No need to start personal attacks around here. After all, some of us resemble that remark.

Me included. grin

Mick, you're my target to admire...I think you told me one time you didn't know how many rods you had...(or maybe not) flehan.

I tell people if they KNOW how many rods they have, they don't have enough and need to buy more from us.. thumb
