Hey, I am new to this forum. I live in Wylie and fish lavon every chance I get. I have only been chasing the catfish for a year now and with the weather being so cold shad and other cut bait have been hard to come by. Have any of y'all ever tried that "Dead Red" from Team Catfish? If so is it any good? And what other baits are as good as fresh cut bait? Let's hear some thoughts, opinions and maybe some secrets about that?

welcome to the TFF!!!

dead red is good... some guys swear by it. a lot of people soak there shad in it...

Cut carp or Buffalo works well... you can actually by buffalo at some stores.. i think fiesta grocery has it.. (ive herd they do anyway)

IMO... if I had to use something other than shad... and needed it now.. I would go buy live blue gill from a bait shop and cut them up...

Welcome to the TFF. Dead red is definitely a help sometimes and it doesn't hurt at anytime. Buffalo from fiesta is one of the more popular baits when shad is hard to come by

All that commercial stuff works sometimes but i think live bait works best if not live bait then chicken livers or gizzards always gets em hooked. Frozen shad never really did anything worth while for me, if you dont wont to spend the money to buy minnows go fish the creeks for perch and blue gills.

I've had some good fishing using CJ's Catfish bait. Don't touch it though! Fingers will smell BAD for a while! lol

Dead red soaked buff or carp works. I don't use gizzards or livers. I use big baits.

Welcome to the TFF. I'm one of those that swear by the Dead Red. Very very seldom does a bait not get sprayed in my boat. Shad can be dificult to find and catch in the winter time. But with good electronics and the right net it can be done. Bufalo, carp, bream and even drum can be good alternate baits when shad are scarce. Good luck out there and be sure to post some photos of your catch.

if you've got to use a store bought bait and buffalo isn't an option I go with halved chicken breasts.

I've had decent luck with shrimp too on Lavon.
I go to Lavon quite a bit. Hit me up sometime and maybe we'll meet up somewhere.
