Hey guys ..I have a question??
Where did the name trotlines come from??
I am doing some local outdoor videos (hunting and fishing ) and we put some useful tips and info in the show ...but this is a question that came up and I don't know the asnwer...been trotlining my whole life (46) and never even thought about where trotline came from...how they orginated or got the name...anyone know??

I looked it up in the on line dictionary and they referred to set line and gave a definition but not the derivation. Be interesting to know tough

well when I was a kid many many years back, I used to callem troutlines. I used to wonder why as none ever seemd to catch any trout on them.

I always thought it was because you would "trot" down the line checking for fish, thus the name of trotline.
Makes perfect sense to me.
I don't trust a catfisherman who doesn't have shad scales on his hands or his reels...period.

Seigrist - either you're right or darn close...I was told that the name came from "as you trot" is about 3-4' per step/trot and that's where each drop or stagging is attached to the main line giving a trot then a drop, which is almost the same principle as what you said.

I am not sure where the name came from, but I know for a fact that various native american groups in Texas used them.

I have fished with both trolines and juglines. Both catch fish. I have a fishing log from my great granfather and it says the name came from the indians with the word [trot] meaning running, so forth trotlines.
