could it come from "trawl" as in "trawl-line"?

I always thought it was because you would "trot" down the line checking for fish, thus the name of trotline.

Makes perfect sense to me.

I don't trust a catfisherman who doesn't have shad scales on his hands or his reels...period.

Seigrist - either you're right or darn close...I was told that the name came from "as you trot" is about 3-4' per step/trot and that's where each drop or stagging is attached to the main line giving a trot then a drop, which is almost the same principle as what you said.

I am not sure where the name came from, but I know for a fact that various native american groups in Texas used them.

I have fished with both trolines and juglines. Both catch fish. I have a fishing log from my great granfather and it says the name came from the indians with the word [trot] meaning running, so forth trotlines.
