If I was to canoe the Red River for catfishing, where would be a good launch and pickup site? Anyone ever tried this? Obviously the water couldnt be generating or it would be a really fun ride.

A couple of friends and I are talking about trying it. Is 10 miles too far in a canoe paddling downstream? We are talking about making an entire day of it. Paddle down the river and when we find a good hole, stop, get out and fish for a while.

Lifejackets, GPS and a cell phone would be part of the required gear.

Thoughts?

You may want to get several together and do a float trip. Get a map and see what your options are. 10 miles would be a good overnight trip. Of course depends on current. Just use good safe practices as you can get in alot of trouble on a river.

I was on a canoe for the first time about a month ago. The trip downstream was quite easy but comming back was no fun at all. Not to mention that we were catfishing too and it was hard for the person in the front to pull out one of those cats. We were not on the river which I am sure moves a little faster I am sure, but I admit it was fun, but I will never do it again

We are planning to take several canoes and launch from the dam and have some vehicles down stream at the pick up point so we dont have to paddle back upstream.

What you might consider doing it putting a trolling motor on, and bringing several batteries with you. Float down stream and fish, then on your way back turn on the motor and scoot back home.

I was conmsidering the OK side below the dam. There is a good launch point there. I dont know where a good pick up point is though.

Scott,
When are you planning on going I know a guy that does this all the time and I can get in touch with him and let you know where is the best place. Also if you wouldnt mind a tag along I would like to go if I can get my boat fixed in time. Looks like to me the O.K. side would be the best launching place.

Scott A while back I got some directions to a boat ramp on the Red. It's below the dam a ways. I'll forward the directions to you.

Scott ,
10 miles is nothing going downstream , especially if you set aside a whole day for it . I went 7 miles on the Brazos in 2 hours in a 12 foot jon boat , but that was steady moving and no fishing . The biggest problem ( if fishing ) will be finding a spot you want to fish and then staying put against the current , take plenty of rope . wink

You could stop at the carpenters bluff bridge. You take main st east out of denison to get there. I would think water level will be very important on your trip. When the water is off you will be draging that canoe alot, but the fishing is better because it bunches them up in the deep holes.
