We have a team ready to go at Corrigan-Camden High school. We have had a couple of meetings and contacted FLW. FLW has an introductory packet that will help you get started. I am the sponsor and looking for teams to fish against. I would think due to lack of boats and DL, sponsors could run the boat with two fisherman. Adult drives boat, the kids pick where to go and then run trolling motor. I have a couple of adults who have volunteered their time and boats if we could find some other team to compete against. If any other high school in East Texas has a team, please contact me, maybe we can work out a day to help these kids. Thanks epprovasek@corrigan-camdenisd.net

Not to be a downer, but as conservative as Texas public schools are when it comes to safety concerns in this day and age (not to mention the serious budget issues), I don't ever see this happening without an adult in the boat and heavy outside sponsorship... probably not what you had in mind...? Would have lived for it when I was in high school though... Can you imagine?!!!

Think about starting a bass fishing club. That might help get interest started in your school. Our junior high school has a bass fishing club. They have an annual bank fishing tournament that is between club members. As said before, getting schools to get behind this monetarily is tough. If you have a teacher or admininstrator that is a fisherman, that is where you start. This could also be a good community project for a local bass club to help

Join the Federation of Student Anglers.....we're not just a bass fishing group (we also fish for crappie, carp, catfish, perch, whites/hybrids and saltwater species as well), but all we do is build high school and middle school fishing teams (college series coming). We currently have over 1600 student members representing more than 50 schools fishing in roughly 150 events and outings per year (mostly in the SA, Austin and Katy areas). As of January 1, we're making an active push to start chapters in DFW and East TX too.
Fishing from kayaks or any other form of human powered craft, our high school fishing teams are placed into districts and regions and initially compete against schools in their district in three fall and two spring tournaments. Points are accumulated throughout the school year, with the top 25 finishers in each region qualifying to advance to the state championship tournament held each June on Lady Bird Lake (formerly Town Lake) in Austin, Texas. Students are awarded trophies, plaques, fishing/paddling equipment, letter jackets (yes, you can now letter in fishing!), and most importantly, scholarships. The middle school program is set up much the same, but we don't accumulate points.
We also do much more than tournaments; our goal is to teach our members how to become successful anglers, and to pick up scholarship monies while doing it (we hope to award more than $100,000 this year alone). We hold fishing schools; we build boats, rods and baits; we offer fly fishing and tying classes; we have monthly freshwater and saltwater online tournaments; we have monthly chapter and club/team outings; we fish for all species in all waters; we offer paddling classes (ACA instructors) to every member, and we fish every month of the year. In the summer we hold tagged fish tournaments; 2, 3 and 4 person tournaments; summer long weekday afternoon tournaments (like a softball league), and more.
Even if you're the only fisherman at your school, we'll put you in a chapter with the other schools/clubs/teams in your area so you can fish for your school and compete and/or participate in all of our events and activities. Finally, if there isn't a chapter in your area we'll do our best to get one started. Membership is $50 per year, with most activities included.
Sorry to ramble on.....if you want more info check out our website (fishingstudents.com); we're currently building a new site so what you see now is pretty weak. If you want, email us at info@fishingstudents.com and we'll send you a more comprehensive overview of the program, along with info on how to get started.
