1. Dobyns Savvy 702 spinning 2. Shimano Sedona 1000 3. Seguar InvisX 8# 4. Gamakatsu Size#1 dropshot hook (Stock# 50410) 5. cheapest 3/16 oz weight you can find (i tie a knot in my line on the tag end and pinch a split shot on it- saves $$$$) 6. roboworm 4" straight tail in color of your choice 7. plum(chompers brand) for summer, and aarons magic the rest the year 8. anywhere you can cast. dont get hung up on "deep water only presentation". 9. many strikes are a thump, the bigger fish are just heavy weight(feels heavy when pulling up)... just go ahead and keep pulling up cause that light wire needle hook will go into the skin easily.
10. back your drag off as soon as you hook a good one.

You don't need a specialized rod & reel for this method. Any rod with a fairly fast tip will work. I like to use 12 or 15# line. I like Seaquar InvisX but any good line will work.
Don't worry about the technical aspects of the rig until you gain more confidence in it. The rig is basically a catfish rig. A small hook above a cheap bass casting sinker will work just fine. Start with a Zoom Trick worm or Finesse worm in watermelon or green pump. Throw it out and SLOWLY drag it back. Don't twitch the rod too much. You pretty much fish it like you would a T-rig. Most bites are a tick or thump then they start swimming off with it. Set the hook.
Many times I think guys try to put too much action on the bait. Throw it out and slowly drag it across the bottom. You will get bit.
When you gain more confidence in the rig then you can go out and spend money on a special drop shot rig. Until then, use what you got....
waht Ken said ...i fished a drop shot for a couple years on a baitcaster untill i got comfortable with it then i spent the money on a correct setup

if you are just starting out, i would say, go to achademy find a spinning rod real combo, already spooled with 8 to 10 pound line, any will work for now. Get a pack of size 1 hooks and a watermelon red finess worm. you can just use split shot weights for now. This will get you started cheap to find out if you like it. For me the only time i like to use drop shots is sight fishing on beds. But i will, sometimes, use it on deep water points. Good luck and you can pm me if you need some help.

My favorite drop shot setup is a 6'6 medium action spinning rod with 8lb fluorocarbon line. I usually use a 1/4 oz bullet weight for water from 5-25 feet deep. On windy days a 3/8 oz weight is best to feel the bottom. My favorite hook is a 3/0 Owner dropshot hook rigged with a Zoom Finesse Worm or Hag's F-4 Tornado in watermelon red. Also 10-16 inches of line between the weight and worm is ideal. Just work it slow, in deeper water make sure you fish directly underneath the boat. Hope this helps.

Dropshot fishing is a state of mind and methodical presentation. A lot of folks use fairy rods, spinners and light line.. what ever floats you boat. I just loose to many big fish with this set up. I use 15-17# P-Line Flouro Clear line, M/H rod with an STX Revo. An owner 1/0 riggin hook is the best I have found. 4" Dead ringger or 5" ring worm, F4& F5 Tornado or french fry. You need a 1/4-3/8oz weight.. I like the BPS cylindrical weights with the swivel in the top. These weights get hung up less and come thru the grass well. You can use a 5/0 hook and a 10" worm with 20# line on a drop shot rig with a 1/2oz weight if you want to. There's always more than one way to do anything, sometimes you'll find the alternatives fit your style better.
