Anyone know how to keep these things off me while going down the river at night to check lines?

We'll be fishing the Brazos this weekend for a 150 hook tournament and we usually make a night run and millions of bugs hover over the water and holding a spotlight for guidance down the river doesn't help.

They get in your eyes, ears, etc.

ChevyHDGert,

A lot of people swear by an AVON product called "Skin So Soft". And no I'm not kidding! It comes in a spray and its pretty effect against bullnats, which is probably what you're dealing with on the river. As for the light, put a yellow cover over the "white" light using tape or even a permanent marker. You know like the yellow bug bulbs you can buy for outside lights. It's not a perfect solution, but it helps. Good Luck!

Skin so Soft or anything with DEET. Bullnats are the worst flying insects I have ever encountered. They will make you swell up like a mellon. Also try rigging a pole and putting your light at the top of the pole. Duck Tape works wonders.

Be careful putting on bug repellent. It is also fish repellent in the sense that if it gets on your hands and then you bait your line, the repellent is on your bait.

This happened to us one night while fishing the Leon in Hamilton. One guy sprayed himself down with Off and evidently transfered the Off from his hands to his bait. He didn't catch a thing and while two of us did all the catching of channels that night. He was fishing with the same bait, in the same area, and with the same presentation. All we could come up with was that the Off got onto his bait from his hands and the fish could smell it.

Last year, I used a head net to cover my face while going down the river and it seemed like the bugs still got in my face either thru the holes in the net or the net was sealed off good around my neck.

Anyone got suggestions to improve this?

Instead of a net, use a pantyhose stocking (use the sheer style - not the fishnet style laugh )
