So they just fillet up real easy? Cool, cool. I'd like to try and catch some one of these days, but none of the lakes around here have any. Maybe I'll have to hit up one of those power plant lakes some day. They'd probably be real good cleaned on the shore and grilled on a camp fire.

I never seen one before this year. I did not know they were in Travis. I hear they were only recently introduced there. They breed real fast and may already be closer to you than you think.

They are real hard to catch. We shot that one and caught several more in cast nets. Never caught one on a hook.

They are some strong mean buggers though. Would be a great fight on R&R

i think talapia will not survive in water temp below a certain degree ... they may not survive unless it's a power plant lake

BigCat2

I'm interested in catching Talapia. I have eaten them before and they taste good, (Fried).. I see you are from Leander, What lake would you recommend for catching Talapia.. I'm want to try catching them on a rod and reel.. Used to catch them back in Hawaii using a bamboo pole and worms. Never have ate them till I got here in Texas... We use to use them as Crab bait in the rivers.. Thanks..

I really do not know how to catch them on R&R .

Travis is the only place I've seen them. And I may have only caught them in my net because I happened to catch them spawning in the shallows. I have not caught one in a while now.

I read some people catch them in some poer plant lakes. They may be the ones to ask.

Fool4fishing - I believe some people catch Talipia on flies. ( As in fly fishing, not actual flies lol. ) Someone had a post a while ago about fishing in Panama, I believe, with his kids, and catching tons of big Tilapia on rod and reel. They were using bobbers, and I think they were using corn as bait, but that might just be the carper in me talking. I'm pretty sure it was Ricardo though, you ought to ask him about how he caught the Tilapia.

Starless Tilapia are real good caught and cooked on the camp stove! Fairfield is close to you with some decent camping. You should check it out some weekend.

Don't let them carpers get on your nerves. They don't eat carp either. They make no effort to control the population of carp even though killing the small ones would be beneficial to the overall population and the lake. Throw one up on the bank and a raccon gets a meal. Send it to ghe dump and the worms get some. In fact carpers bitching about others eating carp is probably the greatest hyprocrisy in fishing.

Sorry it took so long to get back with you bigcat2. Yeah Im a bowfisher/hunter. I love it. Ill tell you about some of my bowfishing stories offline as there are some sensitive violin readers on here and I, like you, do not want to argue with anyone about it. My pond is an acre maybe an acre and a half full. I do not dove hunt around it as there is a house within seeing distance behind it. There is a pasture off south east though that I maybe can talk the owner in to letting me hunt. I just got a lab and am training her as we speak. Id love to come up there some weekend and go fishing with ya!!!!

Any reason to post this comment here? By the way, I don't think, or at least I hope, that most carpers around this forum oppose a harvest...just don't want to see healthy large ones harvested or any wasted. I don't see how throwing a carp on the bank is justified...I've seen many carcasses on the bank that had been there a while with no sign of a raccoon eating it. And as for the worms...give me a break, lol.
Fish do make a great fertilizer though.

Sorry if this screwed up your post BigCat

Alan
