There's a tucked away community pond very near my home where I've enjoyed catching panfish and shiners on ultralight tackle a couple times. A few days ago I went back to check it out and noticed some bubbles rising in one area and moving about a little. The water around the bubbles appeared slightly colored too (though it's hard to be sure since the water is heavily stained already).

At first I assumed it was turtles, as they are EVERYWHERE around here; however, after 20 minutes the bubbles were still rising up occasionally but no turtle surfaced. Dare I to hope that a tiny 1.15 acre community pond right by my home has carp in it? If so, how could they have gotten in there?

I've been feeding a spot every night this week with a handful of luncheon meat and sweetcorn and plan to try for carp Saturday morning. We'll see what happens.

Nope. Probably just the kids at the college testing chemicals.

Just Kidding- There are Carp in just about any puddle of standing water in Texas; I wouldn't doubt that your spot held some Carp or Koi.

If I fish it, I can find out if it has Catfish.

I second what Chad said "Carp in just about any puddle of standing water in Texas"
We caught an 8 pounder out of a pond that size not too long ago.

Good Luck maybe someone released a few koi in there at one point!

That's very encouraging. I continued my feeding again tonight. Hopefully by Saturday, any carp that may be there will be well accustomed to and addicted to sweet corn and luncheon meat. BTW, who the hell eats luncheon meat anyway? That stuff is nasty.

I'd cut back on the lunch meat. Every turtle in the place will be drawn in.

Throw some Bread on the surface. If anybody feeds ducks, the Carp will learn that bread is a food source.

Try Freelining Bread. No sinker- Just a (strong) hook at the end of the line. Wad the bread on the hook so that you have the tip of the point exposed. Cast it out about 15 or 20 Feet and watch the line.

Good Luck!!

+1

Chad gave me this very same advice right after I moved to Texas and it turned me into a certified breadhead. Seriously, I gotta get back to those basics as I caught a LOT more carp (from ponds) on freelined bread than I have since I've moved in a more Euro direction.

As to how carp get into different, seemingly isolated waters, the theory goes thus:

Carp don't build nests when they spawn. They wallow around in very shallow water and release their eggs in places where they get stuck to weeds, etc. Ducks or other water birds get these eggs stuck to their feet and then they fall off into other bodies of water when they fly over or into them.

These guys are right...there are probably very very few bodies of water in Texas that don't have any carp in them. They are extremely efficient at proliferating.

I may try that. I've found bread to be one of the best values in bait too though I've only used it for panfish. I'll scale back the luncheon meat too. I hate turtles.

If I were you I'd only throw out sweet corn and little balls of wet oatmeal(leaves a nice cloud of bait)
