I have a 2-story brick home that needs work on the trim all the way around. Also need to redo the screens on 2nd floor balcony and other work as well.

I estimate the gables on both ends max out at about 28 feet. Doing all the work off a ladder is not an option for me so here is the dilemma. My plan is to complete the work over the course of 2011 and I was wondering if scaffolding is my best bet?

I did see some scaffolding on Craigs List. Any other ideas on what to use or where to get scaffolding I can buy and have here at the house for an extending period?

Your wife is not gonna like having scaffolding on the side of HER house for an entire year.

If it were me I'd hire out to get the work done. I've heard too many stories of people falling off ladders and sustaining serious injuries. Your job sounds pretty involved and hence the risk goes up.

She owns the inside, I own the outside and the garage, though I better double check on that........

Yeah, I am already thinking of just doing the stuff I can do off of 15 foot of scaffold which includes the screens on the balcony and then hire out the work that is way up there.

I installed new gutters several years ago and that was not fun....

At this point, I'm looking for some scaffold. Emailed several folks on craigs list to see what is available.
Any advise on what type of scaffold to look for?

if you dont want to hire it done. use ladder jacks with a walkboard or get a set of pump jacks and a walkboard. both ways are reasonably priced for a do it yourselfer.

Having someone else do the work gives you more time to spend on Fork. wink Which seems like the best idea to me.

Scaffolding is expensive to buy even used. Lock down some time you can attack the project and get it done within a months time and rent it. Its not too bad to rent and now is the time to get a good deal on rentals as rental places have their lots full and need to get it back in circulation. If you cant do that then have it done for you. Rent from TNT in Dallas or a scaffold specific place like it you will get a much better deal than going through RSC or some place like that.

Scaffolding is bulky, heavy and takes time to move that you could spend working.

Still looking for some used scaffold. The stuff on craigs list seems to turn over pretty quick and they are asking $70-$80 a set.

Found some new units for $107.50
Castors are $80 and shipping is $90 for 3 sets of 5 foot scaffold.

What you need is a USAF B-4 Aircraft Maintenance stand. It has a platform about 7' x 3' with removable rails on all sides. A manual hydraulic pump activates a scissor lift that puts you up close to 10' if I recall correctly. You can wheel that sucker all around your house and lift yourself up as high as you needed without having to mess with the semi-perminant structure of scaffolding.

The hard part is stealing it from your local Air Force Base. The MP's don't like that much.

No matter what type of arrangement you have worked out... as soon as you do something she doesn't like, it becomes HERS. Not hers, but HERS.

pump jacks are deadly & i have been on a bunch of them
easy going up just like anything
but
the ride down is treacherous

Look up Industrial Ladder, They have a few locations or Betco Scaffold. Both will rent or sell.
