Just sell it and subtract that from your inventory. You ran into a lazy salesman.

When I was in retail management, we weren't allowed to start inventory until the store closed. Yes, it made for some late nights, but that's preferable to losing money due to a ticked off customer...

Yep. Buy a bunch of pizzas and tell everyone to get comfortable, it's going to be a long night.

I am the GM of an industrial supplies store. See my profile pic to see which one. I had to chime in on this “customer service” issue. These kind of situations just burn me up!! Because the real issue in this situation is customer service not the year end inventory. The only reason you survive in business is having PAYING CUSTOMERS!! Without amazing customer service your business will not make much money. You have to go way beyond the typical expectations if you want to be really successful. Just because a store is going through an inventory audit or anything for that matter the management should have took actions to deterred customers away from a “SALES COUNTER”. They could have met you at the door explaining what is going on and the reason why they are open at that moment in time….or just close the doors completely. Think outside the box sometimes!!

All companies have their own means of operating, but the better ones realize the reason their doors are open is the CUSTOMER!! Too many people these days just show up to work for a paycheck and go home. You will see the difference when you meet a true customer service related business!

Depending on the costs of the product I would have just given the product to you on good faith and dealt with payment after the inventory issues were done. NEVER EVER turn away business no matter what!! I have a ton of stories about people walking into my store that I thought was just a simple guy and it turns out to be the CEO of a huge corporation just seeing how we operate! EVERYONE is important to me and it should be that way for everyone!

People are just so worried that someone is going to take advantage of them these days and they just overlook the honest guy. I think with a servant heart and let the big guy upstairs sort them out later!!

oh and yes its 11am and I am on my lunch break!! lol

This is a great post. If I've ever been involved in an inventory, it was done after 5:00pm or on the weekend. The door was wide open, I didn't see a sign saying "inventory - no sales", or anything. It was during normal business hours. My purchase would have been around $30.

When taking inventory, the tax man only knows what you tell them. Selling a part or a coke, for that matter, isn't going to hurt anyone. If you just can't make yourself help a customer, put out the, closed for business, sign.

It really ain't rocket science!

If there is a "will" there most likely is a "way" There are times when there may not be a "way", but if the "will" is put forth then in the end, through good communication and effort, all parties will be understanding and most of the time satisfied with the outcomes. In this situation, there are many solutions, the "will" was just not there in my opinion.

if the door is left unlocked and the store or business is operating during normal business hours then they shouldnt be able to refuse your ability to purchase parts or other goods and services unless you have been banned ect for some other infraction in said store could say something to the BBB about them

If it was I would love to hear it. I have a (now) great horror story about dealing with them.

if Walmart can keep their registers open and do inventory, then a small arse parts store can...

no excuse. its called lazy and they shouldn't be in business. that would be the first and last time i visited that store.

Usually there will be an auditor on site to make sure this happens. The door should have been locked with an explanation sign posted.

BS. Whoever made the call to nopt sell the parts is either lazy or ignorant of accounting/inventory procedures. Inventory is a very simple count of the parts on the shelves. If you sell a part during the count, you simply make an entry to decrease your stock, and increase your sales.

Not BS. If inventory moves during the count, it's not an inventory, it's a cycle count.
