I was in Fredericksburg Texas back in June and found all these little red bugs on a milkweed plant. I had never seen this type of insect before. I took these pictures and later found out they are called large milkweed beetles. http://www.gather.com/viewSlideshow.action?albumId=30248

not really beetles (order: coleoptera)...they're a true bug (order hemiptera) they include: stink bugs, leaf footed, squash bugs, cicadas, assasin bugs, hoppers, aphids and allies "hemipterans have hypodermic-needle-like mouthparts that allow them to extract subsurface fluids from plants and animals." http://cirrusimage.com/bugs.htm

we always called them box elders, they are hard to get rid of once they take over a tree. Those things would be all over the cedar fence posts at the Fw zoo when I worked there. Nice photos!

The boxelder bugs that infested our neighbors trees/house (and ours too) were more black with red spots. They were impossible to get rid no matter how many times I sprayed poison (more than 20). I finally talked my neighbor into cutting down both trees. Of course I had to do it for free, but it was worht not having bugs on the side of my home.
cool pics

If it would have jumped in that last photo, you would have probably had to clean your shorts.........
