100K in 2 years sounds like alot. I would wonder what the truck was used for. I would look at the transmition fluid see what it looked like and the oil. Give a general look over under the hood, tire, see if it has a gooseneck/fifthwheel hitch in it. Past that you may ask if any recals have been fixed on it or get on an online diesel forum to see what kind of recals they may have had.
That is about all I can think of.
Good luck, some will call them crud some will praise them. I know several people that own them and are happy with them.

listen for the turbo to make sure it sounds right and watch ALL the gauges on the test drive. Make sure all temps and pressures/boost are good. The oil will most likely be black like almost every other diesel, just make sure it dont smell burnt or have deposits in it. Watch for blue/black/white smoke from the exhaust, could be something minor, could be thousands of dollars in repairs. If it has a gooseneck or fifthwheel hitch definitely pay attention to how the transmission is working.

Make sure there has been no dpf delete kits and tuners/chips installed. Also ask the service dept. To pull up an aftertreatment history report. This will give you an idea of the condition of the dpf giving it still has one. If the truck is re-gening more often, or there is black residue in the tail pipe, this indicates either an aftertreatment issue or an engine smoke issue. If the dealer won't repair run away!

You buying it from an individual or dealer?
If it is a dealer sounds like they are feeding you the "old man used to drive this" story.

Look carful at trans and find out what he pulled with it. Some of the people that are the hardest on a vehicle that I know are old men... My dad and uncles will drive one much harder than I would ever think about.

Yep, my dad thinks that 6th gear at 10 mph is ok in his Dodge. Look carful at trans and find out what he pulled with it. Some of the people that are the hardest on a vehicle that I know are old men... My dad and uncles will drive one much harder than I would ever think about.

It may be better if it DID have a DPF delete on it.

Honestly, that doesn't sound like that great of a deal. 2 years ago, my dad bought his 2005 2500 with the Duramax with 60k miles for $18k. $23k for one with 100k miles sounds like a lot to me, but I haven't looked at the market lately either.

I have a 2008 Z71 with 89000. I pulled a 32' fifth wheel quiet a bit at first. Sold it and just pull a boat now. Driving in the construction business in and around the metro mess can add up miles quick. My truck has never smoked at all. I quess cause of the dpf. BUT, driving the speed limit or so, even on road trips, I only get about 13.9 mpg. Per the computer. When the warranty is up, no more dpf.
I can say that my truck, aside from fuel mileage, is the best deisel I've owned. Faster, stronger, quieter than Ford or dodges that I've owned. IMO that truck is designed to pull. Properly used, a truck with a 5th wheel or gooseneck hitch would never worry me.
Of course, this is my personal opinion and I am not an expert. But I've owned a few trucks and this one is hands down, the best.
Goodluck and check it good!
