Quachita and Beaver in Arkansas
Texoma in OK and TX
Town Lake (Austin) and Canyon Lake in TX

As many as 10-15 could be listed and any four of them could be the hot spot from year to year.

The better success ratio is in the river systems that flow thru these lakes.

I value your opinion a great deal but I never heard of Canyon being a top lake?

In Texas my top 4 would be Texoma, Tawk, Whitney, Buchanan

Tell me more about Canyon seeing I am 45 minutes away.

Town Lake is interesting. The only time I have ever been on town lake was in the summer and I think I have been permantley scarred due to the jet skiers and pleasure boat idiots.

Canyon is off the beaten path and the other highland lakes around it probably pull in more Austinites for recreational purposes than Canyon. There are good sized fish in Canyon lake as attests to the catches they made on the Guad below the dam. If you look at the catch dates, a 38 and a 33 lb. striper were caught in the lake in March and April of 1997. If you look at the Guad River records below the dam, 3 of the 5 were caught BEFORE (1994, 2 in 1996) the 2 big lake stripers were caught. Don't know about you but that makes me go "Huuuuummmmmmmmmmmmm".

I have only been on Canyon once and it was a mad house. All the folks from San Antonio area go to it. Beautiful lake though may just have to go give it a shot. My problem is if I am driving down that Direction its easy for me to talk myself into driving a few more miles and go catch reds at Calavaras. Tough decision

I'm planning to kayak fish for stripers in the spring. I live about 45 min from Canyon Lake and I was wondering if anyone could give me a report/tips for that lake like, best lures, which side of the lake the stripers are active in etc. I live south of the lake so it would be awesome if you could tell me good spots in the southern end. Do you think i would catch stripers by freelining live shad? Any tips and suggestions are appreciated, thanks in advance, Tye

Why do we not see anyone on this forum posting striper reports from the rivers? All of the reports seem to be from the main lakes.

If the success ratio favors Striper fishing in the rivers, and I suspect it is, why do we not see river reports? Do the Striper guides not fish the rivers?

Would you spill the beans on your hotspot? The only people who will post about their success on rivers are usually guides, Die hard trophy fishers are going to remain quiet about their area/techniques - you just have to get out there and try a spot based on research you've done. I've attempted to give you all some research I've done - now go forth and test it. Be sure to check moon phase, barometer and potential weather patterns coming in. If you have favorable moon and barometer with a front moving thru within the next 24 hours, you need to be on a known trophy fish area. It requires thought and a lot of experiment and hard work but when you connect, it all starts to come together and confidence builds because it was all YOU that put the pieces together.

Look at it like golf - you can't be a good golfer by only playing 9-holes once a week. You have to invest time to become successful, a LOT of time!
