bought my 84 bayliner on the 22nd of september from a gentlemen who was having legal trouble,he was asking $2000 for the bayliner but i only had $1500 to spend we came to an agrement for $1530.when i arrived to pick up the title's we sat down and he signed over all the document's and he also gave me the card of the shop were he get's the boat serviced.he also gave me the owner's manual to the boat all the recipt's to the boat the production sheet were he ordered the boat from.the boat had just come out of the shop four day's prior to me buying it were the paperwork state's new impellar, new stator assy, bottom corb worked on,primer bulb,+labor for a total of $407.53 i think this nice man really loved his boat felt bad i had caught a good deal on another man's misfortune, what do you guy's think should i feel bad or should look at it shallow and say one man's lost is another man's gain?

Ewww. Ethics question.
I dont shop at pawn shops becasue I feel weird about buying stuff that is proably there becasue someone hit hard times and had no alternative. On the other hand, he would have sold it to someone else if he hadn't sold it to you. I guess my point is, if YOU feel comfortable with YOUR decision, you probably made the right decision for YOU.

Instead of wondering if you took advantage of him, think of it as helping him. He may have lost a boat, but gained $1500 which he needed, and otherwise would not have had.
Give the boat a good home; take care of it and use it often--I'm sure the former owner would appriciate someone enjoying it.

Tell him he can buy it back if he ever wants to for the same price. Selling a boat for what you gave for it is almost impossible, unless you got a good deal.

Sell it to me for $850 and clear your conscious. That way you will feel like you lost a little on the deal as well.
