From my experience with the bass opens the majority of the pros aren't good enough to be fishing as a boater. You have the few guys who are sticks and then you have the rest who should stick to media events but just have money to blow. Well every time I fish as a coangler I draw those guys. I have drawn a few good ones but it always seems they aren't on fish the day I get them or something goes wrong such as motor trouble or forgetting an insurance card. I'm not trying to sound rude by saying this but it has been my observation. And I'm sure lots of other guys would say the same thing

Speaking of making the best..... My buddy drew a guy with the oldest beater boat this year on Amistad. (if you saw it you know the one) With the tricks we found in practice they had the best day you could possibly have. They smashed the fish! Now it did take a little coaxing to get the boater to go with the plan, but once they did....the boat got loaded quick! My buddy(coangler) says it was one of the best days he ever had...minus the old broken down boat. (pumps, TM, you name it was going out) BTW he also fished out of Bryon Velick's boat from last year....they ended up with broken Power Poles and broken motor brackets hanging off mid day at Texoma. One year old boat.... They had to get towed out another ramp....it cost them all their fish! My buddy would have had a top 20 for the year otherwise. Anything can happen...... It was a tough year this year......adapting was the key!

One thing to Remember JT.. the OPENS are guys trying to make their way.. and you are right.. MANY of them are not going to be on fish.. just the way it is.. I realize that. Im just saying MANY of them are no where near good enough to make a living at fishing. I realize good fisherman have bad days and I realize things go wrong. But some of those guys just keep at it never making a dime. Which that's fine. I am just giving my co angler experience. I have done it twice and won't do it again

Welcome to the world of fishing as a Co-Angler.
Sign up and fish the front end, or tough it out and do the best you can with what is given to you.
Their are fish there to be caught, just got to find a way to catch them.

Have to be a member of B.a.s.s. and entry fee is 350.00 for co. angler. Payout is 30,000 to first place. you can see a list of complete payouts on bassmaster.com under Bassmaster open tournaments.

I know personally I don't feel ready to be a boater in that trail yet but to those that do I wish you well. If I ever step up I want to be able to be competitive and not just say I fish the boater side.

Years ago it was a dream to fish the BASS or FLW tour as a Co-Angler, Being from Illinowhere I wanted to fish all these southern lakes. Its expensive, I never could save enough to fish them all in a year. Now that BASS no longer has Co's fishing a whole open series as a co don't have the same meaning, its just a tournament by tournament deal now, its win the boat or nothing. If your super competitive being a Co Angler is frustrating, If your fairly new to the sport or really easy going about everything, its a great experience. I had a blast at Amistad last year, but it want about the OPEN, It wasn't about who i drew or where I finished, it was so much fun because of Amistad and what lurks beneath the surface. I wanted to fish Lewisville but it will be hard to get linked for just 1 tournament.
