I was planning on going to a local pond with a buddy thursday, and was gonna pick up some range cubes from the feed store wednesday evening. I was thinking about chumming the pond wednesday night then a little thursday when i get there. Is this the way to go or should I do it differently? Im new to using range cubes to chum. Any help would be appreciated.

Would chumming the night before be a good idea? to get them used to the taste/smell?

Range cubes will work fine and it's not as messy as having to deal with soured grain. Just fill up a PVC tube with a cap on one end or get one of those plastic baseball bats and cut the end off it. Works great for broadcasting the range cubes out.

You only need 3-4 handfuls of the stuff to get started.

There's a fine line between fishing and sitting on the water looking like a darn fool.

Its a pond less than an acre in size. There is some good quality channels in it. Seen some 10 lbrs... average is 3-4lbs

heck just throw out 4-5 handfuls or 6-7 and then when you go back next day throw out 3-4 and see if they come to it. If they do when they quit throw out some more. Just don't over feed them. Chum is just for getting them in the mood lol. Kinda like wine and candles.

Sometimes I hang a fish basket over the side with a bunch of 20% cubes and let them disintegrate... shake it up and down once in a while to make a cloud of grain. It disperses the smell in the crumbles, does not fill up the bellies, and attracts bait fish to the area around the boat.

Here is the thing to always remember about chumming.

Put it where the fish already plan to find food. If these catfish get fed regularly since they are in a pond then chum the spot where they get fed and use something that floats rather than range cubes. If they do not get fed then you need to think about where these fish would feed in the pond and put your cubes there. I would suggest you get something smaller than the cubes so that it dissolves faster, such as allstock or creep pellets. That way the fish smell it, but they have to work really hard to eat and it takes them a long time to get full.

If you just through the bait to some random spot in the pond then it may not make any difference in all the first time you fish it. I would look for the deeper water, and if the is any sort of structure in the pond or cover, and put my bait there.

I have used them in a pond and didn't notice too much of a difference. I may have thrown too many out though and just fed them. Would it be worth it to toss a few out in the Trinity or would the slow current just wash it away? I thought about tying a feed sack to a tree with a bunch of them in there, and tossing it in the water. This way, just some of the scent gets out. Anyone have any suggestions for the river? thanks!
