For anyone who's interested, there are still plenty of blue cats up shallow in Grapevine Lake.

Today while carp fishing as part of a Demo for the Texas Outdoor Expo, I caught a nice blue cat, about 7 or 8 pounds, ( Didn't weigh it. ) Later from the exact area we caught another blue, about 3 pounds.

The 3 pounder ended up back in the water, the 7-8 ended up in the kids catfishing tank and will be released when their channels are released.

( We also "donated" an 18 pound buffalo, and a 27lb buffalo to the kids catfishing tank so that kids could see some big fish! )

The larger blue was almost as long as the 18lb buff, but no where near as thick, or broad even with a hefty belly.

Plenty of buffs in the 15-27 range, and a 14lb common carp, but I thought you guys might be interested to know that the blues are up shallow still.

If you don't know where the Expo is, it's in Meadowmere Park on GV Lake. You should check it out, TFF has a booth set up there, and we were set up behind it doing Demos.

Hmmm...Justin, is there a fee to fish that park? Is it a 24hr park?

Blues should be shallow through this month for this part of Texas. Up in Oklahoma, you'll find 'em shallow in June...and I mean biggin's. Maybe a trip to Grapevine soon for me.

Yeah. I'm sure there are some bigger fish in the area. The 8 came on carp bait ( Boilies, forgot what flavor. ), and I imagine if we'd had shad on there or something we'd have caught more cats, and maybe some bigger ones.

As for the fee, there is a fee booth there so I guess sometimes there is a fee, but today it was closed due to the expo. It might be a boat launch only fee, and free for bank use. Not sure.

Shad and cut shad seem to catch a lot of blues from what I hear. Mine usually come on minnows of one type or another. Though the 8 we caught yesterday came on carp bait ( Double boilie rig ) as did an 18lb blue earlier, and I believe a 22lb blue has also been caught on carp bait while carp fishing at GV.

But you should be good with stick with live bait or cut shad, maybe cut bluegill or drum? The 3 pound blue yesterday was caught on a black salty.

I'm sure DWclark can give you some great advice too, as can many of the other cat anglers here.

Good luck!

Just use fresh shad in the stumps around marshall creek and you should be fine. Fish on bottom in 2-5ft. Whole shad or cut shad doesnt really matter as long as its fresh.

Shallows through September!!! Awesome...and I've lived somewhat close to this lake for most of my life without even bothering to go over there but a handful of times. The shallows you're talkin' about DWClark...are they close to deep water and/or a creek channel? Just want to know what my best chances are. Thanks,

Alan

the far north west end of the lake is where i'm talking about. There are 3 coves up there. Fish in the middle and right one smile and dont be afraid of the water thats only 1 or 2 ft deep....the 31lb i caught last weekend came from 1.9ft...

I'm assuming you're talkin' the direction in at the bank from a boat? Thanks for the advice.

Is this why I am only catching small cats right now? I have fished everywhere from 7-25 feet. I am only catching a few keepers size fish and a whole bunch of very small channel cats.

Do you make long casts into the shallow water? Seems the fish would be spooked in that shallow of water.
