I know hubbard catfish love them shad but i dont have a cast net so i wanna just go catch some perch but dont know where them fish are laying out. Does anybody know where i could catch some perch for bait around the ray hubbard area. I have fished rowlett creek a bunch looking for baitfish and all I ever pull out of there is bluegills.

I'd try some local ponds in a park near you. Everytime I throw my cast net in a pond at a city park to try to get shad, I usually pull 6 perch to every 1 shad.
That's the way baseball go...

Perch are kinda deep right now. 10-12' from what I have caught in the net. They are holding the channel edges, pretty close to the crappie apparently.

Go to almost any city park pond/lake and use light line, #8 cricket hook and earthworms.
Grandson and I catch a bucket full in spring, summer and fall......winter is slower but still productive.
****Sun sinking low....lines baited.....gentle south breeze blowing...you realize.........I AM! .

All I ever pull out of there is bluegills. Just cut the bluegill up and use them.

They sure dont make it that easy to find. But glad I know now http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/fishboat/fish/management/stocking/urban/regulations.phtml

It is illegal to net bait in a city park, I was warned. But it ain't illegal to catch them on line and pole, that takes time. What happened to small mom and pop bait shops around our lakes,I have seen them slowly dissapering.

I will have to do further research on this matter. Community lakes can be in City Parks and it does not show for cast nets to be illegal it does for the Neighborhood lakes but not community lakes that are not in State Parks.

Whats the difference between bluegill and perch?? Oh Lord--- A lot of us call many of the sunfish variety "perch". Most of us are Ok with that, others want to be more specific. Those will probably chime in, but I will still call them perch. While we have a "perch" thread going, does anyone ever freeze them like shad for the winter when they aren't so easy to catch?

What has happed to you does not define who you are-
HOW you react to what happens to you DOES!
