Biomagnification. The chemicals we put out into the enviroment end up in the waterways and wind currents and enter the food chain. They get more and more concentrated as one moves up the food chain to the top predators.

That's how DDT sprayed on fields ended up in Eskimos in Alaska and why its metabolites are present in your body today. It's why killer whales and polar bears in the Arctic are contaminated with fire-retardent chemicals humans use.

It's all interconnected in the great web of life.

What can you do about it? Vote for politicians who are commited to the environment. One has to think long-term, what will those waters be like in 20 years, 50 years, etc. Will they be clean enough for your great-great-grandkids?

VOTE FOR STINKING POLITICIANS!!!!!? That isn't the answer. Do something for yourself and educate friends and family, who will do the same! Politicians barf Their idea is to have studies, committees, raise more money for their own cam-pains and then dole out about 1/10 of funds for the project at hand.

They are also the ones who enact legislation that controls chemicals and wastes. Sure, educate yourself and your family, that's a first step.

Now try to educate that big chemical plant down the road spewing things from the smokestack and discharging pollutants into a waterway.

I was watching a show on Disovery and they were talking about how a killer whales body is considered Biohazard Chemical Waste due to the extreme levels of toxins in them and it also said that the majority of the whales are developing cancer due to it. Sad aint it, Free willy was better off at Sea World.

The article did say the smaller fish were good to eat. Only the larger ones have the mercury/selenium issues, and only one lake was warned about not to eat the sandies and stripers. thumb

No... not studies!!!! They should just ask joe smoe to tell them what the problems are!

I agree, politicians have their own agenda, but don't bash the science. The science is solid, and is independent of politicians (at least it should be, which is not always the case).

We need to start in our own back yards, and front yards for that matter. Do you put chemicals of any kind on your yard??? What will those chemicals turn into in the next few years? The next DDT is on the shelf at your local Home Depot just waiting to be sprayed on your yard.
