I was just on the TPWD website looking at the current records for Grapevine Lake. The reason for this was a 27 lb blue cat I saw caught last Thursday. (It might have been. Current record says 27. It could have been close but I am sure it is in his freezer now.) Anyway, guess what I found?

There is no record listed for Channel Catfish on Grapevine Lake. None at all. I don't know if that is an oversite on the web page or if no one has bothered to turn one in for the record.

Be an awful easy record to set for some TFF'r.

Kevin

I have checked out the TPWD record page and I always think that some of the records are very outdated and just wrong. Does anyone else think that? I was wondering if anyone knew a definite accurate site where you can check out records? Maybe I am completely wrong and TPWD is all up to date, but some of those records just seem rediculous, or perhaps people just don't care enough to submit records, but I don't think that is the case.

good topic and I have wondered myself how up to date the TP&W site is!
Anyone in the know out there?

I know that not all of them are acurate, because we have caught many fish over the posted records on some of those lakes, and there are others out there that catch fish by far bigger than ours. Besides it is such a pain in the a** to get a fish registered that I don't think I would even mess with it unless it was a state record or something. My vote is for inaccurate.

I vote for accurate since the site was updated on May 5, 2005.

I know that Benbrook lake is up to date. There is a record for a yellow bass that is dated 04/18/2005 for a .2 pound 8-inch fish. My normal fishing partner has the (registered) lake record for both black and white crappie on this lake and he went through the process last spring. Basically all that he did was take his catch to the TPWD Inland Fisheries dept on Hatchery Rd near Lake Worth and an official measured, weighed, and photographed his catch and submitted the paper work to the state. While the official was weighing his record white crappie he noticed a black crappie in the live well and since there was not a previous lake record listed, he entered it as the lake record even though it was just a 10.75 inch fish. Anyway, it took about 3 weeks after he submitted the paper work for the website to be updated.

So as far as I know, the website is up to date. That doesn't mean that people don't catch record fish everyday. They just don't always take the time and effort to fill out the paper work and make it "official". I personally have beaten the black crappie record many times over, but I am not about to make a special trip to the TPWD Inland Fisheries office for a 1.5 pound crappie. But that is me, to some it is worth the time and effort. So just because a catch may be listed as an official lake record, it doesnt mean that it is the actual lake record.

I think that most of the records are up to date. I have the lake record for white crappie on Eagle Mountain. Although it is a little time consuming to get the paperwork filled out, its fairly easy to do. I had the fish weight in at a Minyards at the cash register.. The only catch to the whole process is to have a certified scale and a witness. 3 weeks later you get the award from the state.

Can some one please tell me why people want to turn fishing, into the same greedy, record hungry, ego trip, that hunting is spiraling toward oblivion in now. Have we all become so bankrupt of feeling good about ourselves, that we have to worry about trying to set some kind of record, even if it is a lake or water body record, to make us feel like we are some one. This is getting like people not shooting deer unless they are a certain number of Boone & Crockett, or Pope & Young in size. It is getting to the point that people that just want to fish or hunt and enjoy themselves and be satisfied with what they catch or kill, are being treated like second class or less citizens cause they aren't trying to set some kind of record. Calm down turbo. I have been fishing for almost thirty years and I wouldn't mind a lake or state record, its just bragging rights. I know right now the lake record for LMB at Mountain Creek is just over 6lbs I have caught alot of LMB out of there over that but I don't know where to register them at. Take a chill pill and let people be, for the most part that record won't stand for long, once people find out about it if its worth anything. Just go fishing and feel fortunate that you are able to. I have a friend whise brother has MD and having some kind of lake or state record has been his dream but due to his conditions will more than likely never happen. So I say fish like there is no tomorrow for you never know when tomorrow might be here

Well, can I have the record then ?
Last year I caught a 11 pound 3 oz. channel cat by Scott's Landing Marina one night.
I'll catch the paperwork on the next biggie I land out there. LOL

Likely just a SNAFU. Buddy of mine held the channel cat record there for years.

I just feel that trying to set a record of any kind, with our modern society as hectic as it is, is a poor way to justify a persons existence. You will notice the key word here is trying, and I am talking about people that have had articles written about themselves that just go from one water body to the next, trying to set a record. As I have said to people that only want to shoot big bucks, in the long run, the only person that those records or those antlers are going to mean anything to, is the person that shot the deer or fought the fish, cause probably your wife or kids weren't there for either event, and even if they were, they really don't know what the experience ment to you. I just feel that way too many people are putting an emphasis on the things in hunting and fishing both, that really shouldn't be that important, and if it wasn't that big a thing, then this post wouldn't have gotten started. Why as a species do we have to turn everything in to a contest. JMO

Yeah, I guess records are silly. Why would anyone want to try for records?. I guess Hank Aaron should have been happy just hitting singles and doubles. Cal Ripken was selfish because he wanted that darn consecutive game streak. I understand it's your opinion, but if that's how somebody wants to leave thier mark on society, so be it. It's fishing. I'd rather try to get my name in the paper so to speak by trying to catch a record fish than say, shooting up a high school or leading police on a high-speed pursuit...

Calm down... have some dip. It's freaking FISHING for Christ's sake...

It is not the same thing, hunting and fishing are not competitive sports, they were never supposed to be competitive sports, but because our bankrupt society has decided that the only way that a person can leave their mark on this world is by setting a record of some kind, and by the way your record only stands as long as it is not beaten. As bigger fish are caught, your moment of glory slips farther down the page. Look it up, the bass that was the state record for a number of years, caught out of Lake Medina is not even in the top 50 anymore, and the sad part is, that was a native Texas Bass not a Hybrid Florida transplant. People are becoming to willing to try and get their 15 minutes of glory, no matter the cost or ethics. And that last line, comparing fishing with paid atheletics, and professional atheletes and then saying it is just fishing. I guess I am the only one that sees the problem, but if it is just fishing, why worry about records pertaining to half pound perch, or pound and a half crappie out of some place that nobody has gave a ratsa$$ about setting some kind of record, just so they will have a piece of paper that justifies their existence. I am sorry folks, I grew up when fishing meant you went out to catch something that was pretty good eating and nobody gave a damn about records, except the kind you played on you stereo.
