Hey, Bob. I have used stale bread or buns, works good. Have also used dog or cat food in an old pantyhose. No need to spend money, that's the point of your own trap. I would check every few hours, but I have left traps for 1 1/2 days where I know fresh water will circulate, all the little guys were fine.

Hope that helps

Rod

I've used the stale bread to but i will squish it up into a big dough ball (may use just a bit of water) then freeze it. this just makes it last a little longer.

Believe it or not,the best bait I have found for my bream traps is leftover pizza.Yeah,I know.Sometimes there ain't any leftovers, haha.
But the few times there ARE leftovers,I'll freeze em 'til I need to bait my traps. The gills and other sunfish seem to like it and it last pretty good.
I have caught shad in my traps but I think a school of 'em just swam by and some swam in the trap.I don't know of any bait that will attract them. Then again, there's probably 2 or 3 things I don't know yet.

Try sliced onion. Yeah! Yeah! I know it sounds unlikely, but try it.

i've always used plain old chicken liver, it catches lots of perch and crawfish. not much else though. works great on calaveras and in the guadalupe river. i dunno why it wouldn work anywhere else. and its dirt cheap.

I know crawfish like chicken liver! I threw what I had left (not much) out the other night in clear, shallow water, and there were crawfish all over it in minutes! They must have a good sense of smell because they came scurrying from all directions to get to it.
