Never ate mullet before last week. A cousin of mine who lives in Jax Beach, FL came to visit a brought some smoked mullet. I'm hooked now. It was VERY good. I'll be throwing the castnet at the first chance and firing up the smoker. Anyone else here eat bait?

It won't be the same as the ones you ate.

1st, they have a different species of mullet over there. (Black mullet I think?)

2nd the mullet eat different things over there which leads to them tasting better.

You can try and eat them, but don't expect the same result.

oh the other note, smoked mullet would make good bait for night fishing for raccoons in the backyard

If it ain't broke, fix it till it is.

They taste like mud. I had some when I was a youngster. My grandpa cooked us kids some bait from the freezer. We all sat around laughing about it. Trust me Texas mullet do not taste very good. lol

SAME FISH. Could it be that we don't know how to cook it in Texas?? I'll bet they are great smoked. I'll find out next time I go to Corpus and bring a couple home. I have some nice alder chips that I'll use to smoke them.

I lived in Florida for several years and kept hearing an avertisement on the radio for a local resturant that supposedly had the mullet cooking recipe down to an art. Being the adventurous type, one day I made my way over to this resturant to give 'em a try. Disgusting, is the cleanest word I can come up with. But it must be a matter of taste, 'cause this resturant did sell a lot of 'em.

And speaking of differnet parts of the country and how tastes are different. From the gulf coast all the way around to about Virginia, Bluefish arre thought to be good fighters but not worthy of gracing anyones table. Well let me tell you, from Delaware on up, they have whole charters dedicated to going out and fishing for them and the people up there can't get enough of them. I tried Bluefish while I lived in New Jersey and just like mullet, they were terrible! I'd sooner eat a wormy 40lb black drum than take another bite of either Bluefish or mullet!

That was funny! I guess peoples tastes vary. The mullet I had was strong tasting but I like that. I like bluefish too. Something like tilapia has no flavor to me. I guess the word of warning would be, if you don't like fish that tastes like fish, you will not like mullet. After eating the mullet, I ran up and gave my wife a big ole kiss. She doesn't like fishy fish either. Boy was she mad! I may have a few extra honey-do's after that stunt.

A few years back, I went down and helped with hurricane Ivan clean up along the Alabama Gulf Coast (Perdido Bay area). The people I stayed with were big time mullet and shrimp eaters. They had a mini-shrimp boat they fished/trawled out of and they kept the chest freezer filled with the stuff. Some look down their noses at eating mullet but the true locals consider it a delicacy. Does'nt hurt that they are easy to catch in throw nets! I enjoyed the stuff. Check out this link: http://mulletfestival.com/Mullet%20Recipes.htm

Only way to know if you will like it is to try it!! Everyone's tastes are different. Otherwise, we would not need menu's in cafes and everyone would enjoy those fruitcakes at Christmas!!

FRIED WHOLE! There was a popular "beer joint" in Panama City, Florida that used to serve fried mullet every Friday and Saturday night.

These were about a pound each and fried whole or split and fried if a little larger. Served by the huge platter full, you could eat as long as they lasted...about one hour usually.

They were delicious, the cost was two bucks for the fish fry and beer prices were reasonable. Needless to say, the guy made a fortune.

The fish, fries, hushpuppies and company were great during those days! My 3 month tour in the area at Tyndall was over all too quickly.......Halcyon days of beautiful memories! cheers

I lived in Orlando during the late 70's. Some of the locals took me cast netting for mullet. I recall that it was very good, although with a strong taste.

Mullet roe was a considered a delicacy. It was scrambled with eggs. If you like anchovies on pizza you will like mullet roe.

Sometimes known as the "bread of the sea" mullet are a staple in some parts of the world. If you eat fish and chips in England you may be eating mullet. It is all a matter of taste.
