3. Don't do what I did and try and go cheap on the holster. A good holster (expect to pay 60-100 dollars) will save lots of hassle and discomfort. A cheap holster moves, and shifts, while a good holster stays where you put it.

And just as important, a gun belt. Your walmart belt just isnt going to cut it.

I always carry a Glock 27 (.40 compact) in my truck console and being a responsible pistol owner and CHL, I never leave it in the truck when I go out on the boat. I couldn't live with myself if it got stolen and ended up in the hands of a scumbag, so I bring it onto the boat and put it in the glove box. I have never felt like I needed it, but I have always liked the feeling of knowing it was there if I did.
Although the last time I launched at Hubbard, there was a crazy guy walking around the ramp shouting nonsense at the top of his lungs. It turned out to be nothing, but I was never so glad that I had my Glock with me. Especially considering I had my nephew with me too.
Get whatever kind of pistol that appeals to you, but get some instruction on how to use it safely and clean it properly, then practice with it a LOT until you feel proficient.

Here's a picture of the Glock:

I ALWAYS carry in truck, boat or belt.I sold my wife's auto [ she was mad ] and got her a 38spc.If you are in a bind and need it just point and pull.No need to worry about the thing on a auto.I have auto's but most of the time i have got that little ruger sp101 with some +p+ 357 in it. It will do.

I like wheel guns too. I have a couple S&W .38's that I like to carry from time to time.

i did not carry untill i was at twinn buttes on a tuesday morning last year with one other guy at the ramp when a guy gets out of his truck with a sawed off shotgun and shoots himself in the chest right in front of us. it got me thinking there was nothing keeping him from taking one of us with him, so i got my chl and carry whenever i can, i fish alot during the week alone and hope i never get put in a situation like that again.

Didn't grow up in a hunting household so my gun knowledge is limited to summer camp and older cousins.

I don't know how much knowledge or experience you have but my advice to you would be that once you make your purchase of the right firearm for you, learn and practice as much as you can...and ALWAYS remember SAFETY. Always remember once you pull the trigger, you cant take the bullet back.

I always carry on the water, there is just as much a threat at your local ramp or on the water as there is in a downtown alley.

The thing about carrying a handgun is that it's a personal decision. It doesn't matter what anyone else says for or against it.

I would advise anyone considering it to practice every week with it until using it becomes second nature. In the heat of the moment, finding the safety or clearing a jam can be impossible, and that can cost you your life especially if you have already brandished your firearm.
