You can buy a hand mud hopper from harbor freight for about 20 bucks. Worked great for a knock down texture on a remodeled room that I did. Wouldn't wanna do a whole house with one though cuz it gets kinda heavy after a while. good luck!

attic rooms with hip roofs are the funnest rooms in the house to tape and bed. if you dont know how to make a corner, you will on the time you are through!! you can rent a hopper gun rig at home depot and most rental places.

Done quite a bit of it, having owned rent houses for years. But no expert, by any means. Here's what I've learned
Buy good tools. ( stainless, because rust sucks), get your mud consistency "right". (dont let it dry out before applying it) Warm the room. A really cold room = bad tape job. Take your time and dont overwork your mud while using it. Let it dry 24 hours. Lightly sand it where it needs sanding. Apply a wider coat on the joints the next day. Let it dry out. Sand it for smoothness. ( a REAL pro rarely needs to sand his joints) Then do it a third time....with an even wider blade....if needed. Let it dry and look at it in dim lighting ( shadows will show) fix what needs to be fixing. If you see something, DONT let it go ! You'll hate yourself later. Rip it out , sand it and start all over on any bad areas.
Texture: On walls, there are so many different textures, it's hard to make up your mind. I like using a double brush. Splat one way...turn it 90 degrees, raise the position on the wall and splat again. Repeat for the entire wall.
Thin the mud a tiny bit, blow it on and have someone come right behind you and texture it. ( splat !) Be consistent when are blowing it on.
That's all I know....and it aint much.

I picked up a neat trip a few years back... To decrease the need for sanding, allow your float to dry a while then lightly go over with a big damp sponge... Worked wonders for me!

make sure you apply a generous amount of mud before taping . put a good amount of pressure sticking the tape down and squeeze out excess mud to make sure you have no bubbling . feather the edges on each bed also with good pressure to eliminate hard edges . less sanding makes for easier work . counter sink any nails sticking out .work fast and dont over work the mud .go to youtube and watch some videos . and the best advise i can give you is dont call a pro after you have messed it all up because it will cost you double
