Pretty cool video with Greg Hackney on jigs and jig design. You think this kind of thing is strictly marketing, or do you believe that all the technical aspects like he's talking about really make for a better bait?

I know some of it is marketing hype, but I also believe that these guys are looking for every small advantage they can get. It's pretty interesting to know how much thought goes into the tackle they use.

I fish w/ jigs 80% of the time and I have never had any problems losing fish with jigs period. Bass suck those things in pretty good so there really is never a problem. I think I might have lost one fish on a jig all year.

Thanks for posting.

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know when to go fishing.

Hahaha... I hear that. I suck with a flippin' jig, so it doesn't make a difference to me what angle the line tie is at. I can't get bit anyway. bang

What lakes do you fish, what jigs and trailers do you use? PM me if you want. I'll share some of my experience and see if you can get some hits. Nothing is better to me then jig fishing. If I am having a bad day fishing I will end up with a jig or a worm on my rod at the end of the day.

I appreciate it. I love to jig fish, I just don't like to flip jigs like Hack's doing in the video. Give me a 3/4-ounce football head and put me on a rock pile or brushy point and I'll go to work. But when it comes to flipping, I always seem to pull out the plastic.

Truth be told, I'd always rather be throwing a crankbait... hence my user name. cool

You know it is funny how every ones opinion is different on fishing. It almost makes me not want to listen to any one and just do what I think is best.

Example: In this video he is talking about how he likes to throw a jig because the fish might not be very active.

Then I am reading some blogs from other pro's and Greg Hackney says this:

"Those fish are very inactive in cold, muddy water, so you need something that will aggravate them into biting. That's the reason I don't like a jig or a bottom bait I want something with a lot of 'thump,' " he says. "They're not actively feeding."

So basically this pro is doing the exact opposite of this Hackney guy. Funny.

This was an approach I used onces as well. I just started bass fishing last Feb and was buying up everything people told me to try (Jig wise) and it always seemed like every one said to use a dark color jig, browns, blacks, etc. Well I caught some fish but not the amount I wanted or the size I wanted. So one day I walked into BPS and didn't ask anyone what I should try. Instead I went and bought a white jig and white trailer. Total opposite of all the opinions I was given. Went to RR and caught my PB out there at 6 lbs.

Hackney makes perfect sense here. Never considered the angle of eye, but pros think about everything. Like the idea of the heavy hook too.

Crank B8, you can see if your fishing the area Greg is that you could forget the crank. You are like me, make 'em eat what I WANT! Does look like good frog area, and knowing me I not pick up the jig here. Rather get one explosion on top than five hits on the bottom, but guess if they are inactive I might have to go the Hackney route here, as much as I'd hate to.

Also, I fish for fun mostly, so we have to take that into account on 'what we would do'.

For money we might change our tune in a heartbeat huh?

Exactly. When I'm fun fishing I always try to find fish that will eat something I want to throw... come to think of it, I do that when fishing for money, too. I guess that's what you'd call fishing your strengths.

If I can throw a moving bait, I'm always gonna' throw a moving bait. Maybe it's my ADD. bouncy

It's funny, because I grew up wacky worming and flipping on Rayburn and T-Bend. But as I got older I just got fed up with fishing slow. Don't get me wrong, I love a good flipping bite, but it's got to be a GOOD flipping bite to keep me interested. I could throw a crankbait in 12 feet of water all day, get five bites and be happy. There's just something about pulling fish off structure with a crank that fires me up.

And I'm with you on the frog vs. the jig. Give me the blow-ups any day!

I pretty well cut my teeth jig fishing. When I was a teenager, I wanted to develop a good technique beyond spinners and rattle traps. I watched Denny Brauer on a Bassmasters Tourney jig fishing and I chose this as my technique. When we say jig fishing, I think of how many different variations there are, from big football heads, to flipping jigs, to swim jigs, all the way down to shakey heads. I have learned a few crankbait tricks and such but my passion is still jigs. I probably fish 95% of my time with some sort of a jig. I vary what I throw based on what I want to catch. Flipping jig will usually get less bites but usually quality. Shakey heads will get lots of bites but usually less quality. In touraments, I almost always start with flipping or football heads to see the mood. I the bite is slow I will switch to shakey heads to find a limit, but almost immediately I will switch back to flipping jigs to catch kickers. To each their own, but if I had only 1 bait that I could fish with from now on, it would be a 1/2 oz black/blue flipping jig with a zoom super chunk trailer.
