Koi are 100% cyprinus carpio, in other words, the common carp. They were originally bred in Japan for their cool colors.
In fact, the word "koi" is simply Japanese for carp.

And koi don't have to be bred that way. It's a color mutation that was bred into them in Japan, but the mutation can happen naturally. Not usually as pretty, though, since bred koi are usually from a long line of mutated fish.

Get some commons in the sabine that have the color in a few places. Had 4 or 5 this year, usually just on the tail area.

Wasn't Orange Julius named after Julius Caesar? Its a stretch but I think that would qualify. Plus its just awesome.

Looks like you and Jesse had a great time!!! Conditions looks a little better than Tawakoni that one night! hahaha... man... that was a hot, humid, bug-filled night, wasn't it??

mmmm...I wonder... "well I thought this is pretty cool so I waded around and watch as the fish spawned all around me....I think the highlight was a large koi bright orange with a black strip down its back came with in about 2 feet of my legs and swam around for a bit before jetting back out into the depths...." Me 2007 recounting an athens session about 200 yards from where Chris caught his fish...looking at the photos it fits that description to a T. http://www.carpanglersgroup.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=21199&hl=Session
