My best bud from high school quit cold turkey about 2 years ago. He has a son that had just started high school and his son told him he wanted to be able to fish with his dad for at least another 30-40 years. That was motivation enough and he hasn't taken a puff since.....said that once he made it past the first week it wasn't so tough.

I quit smoking this past April cold turkey. Smoked about 1.5 - 2 packs a day. I would get up in the middle of the night just to smoke, first thing in morning go outside to smoke, smoked non stop while driving (I drive alot at work) so it was a big change for me. I keeped a bottle of water with me everywhere I went. I would go as far as to put a straw in it for the sensation of something like a cigeratte. I also used mints. Ice breakers to be exact. They are sugar free. BUT I WILL TELL YOU THIS, BE PREPARED FOR WEIGHT GAIN, I gained about 20-25 pounds. Starting to loose it now slowly but the metabolism will make a shift when you stop the nicotine. I will tell you this also, my money saved makes my boat payment!

I quit smoking after 18 years by getting Chantix. If you really want to quit all you need is a one month supply($150) but if you think you may struggle get two months worth. I had no crazy side effects like some people say they had. IT WORKS!! I used the chantix, I was laid off, and wasn't bringing in much money over the bills with the unimployment, so I had to make a decision, it was either cigarettes or boat gas, I wanted to fish, I have not smoked another cigarette since, I smoked for 35 years!!! I cut a bic pen in two and chewed and smoked it for a long time!!! It works!!!

It is very hard to do, but no matter what method you chose to help you must be ready to quit. With my experiences I found that I could not stop until I really made up my mind that I was going to stop. I tryed to stop at least 8-9 times, including one 5 year stint that ended badly. Wishing you the very best, make up your mind and I know you can come out on top. New fishing gear, trips, and boats are a good incentive. You can do this, you will not believe how much better you will feel. Jim (exsmoker)

I didnt follow the instructions of picking a day to quit after a week on meds like youre suppose to. I just kept smoking while taking the meds and after about 2 1/2 weeks I just didnt feel the need for it anymore. Once I set em down it never crossed my mind again. Even though I felt better as soon as I quit, after a couple months I could really feel the difference, breath, and smell. It was great!

My dad quit by using the patches. But he also have a big incentive, doc had just notified him if he didn't quit, he wouldn't live that much longer.
He had tried quits several times when I was a kid but could, but the end of life diagnosis gave him extra desire. It was hard for him.
Since I don't drink or smoke, I don't know how hard it is to quit so all I can say is keep trying and take it one day at a time. Good luck to your efforts to stop smoking.
To those that have had a smoking or drinking issue in the past but have conquered it, my hat is off to you and congrats.

Wife says if I quit smoking- cig $ can be fishing gear $- I am a heavy smoker- that would be ALOT of new gear!!! Heck even a boat payment (except can't get finaced ) but how?- cold turkey don't work for me... tried few times....maybe one of them high $ electro- cigerattes?.... Get you a tub of Big Marvs and lace a pack of smokes with it. If that don't make ya quit nothin will Best of luck to ya in all sencerity. I've dipped since I was about 9-10 years old and I have tried quittin several times. I have cut way way back but just can't seem to kick it 100%. I used to dip a can every day or two and now a can last me a whole week. The only time I had quit for more than a month was when I was in Marine Corps Boot Camp. I should've never picked a can up after I graduated but I did. Best of luck to you I hope you kick that habit.
One of these days I'm going to Land the BIG ONE!!

I just ordered blue and may get patches.... envisioning the boat the extra $180-$200 month could buy....... Heavy smoker? Looks like a pack and a half or less spending $180-$200 a month. I quit using Tic-Tacs....yes the little breath mints in the plastic container. Every time I wanted a smoke I pulled a T-Tac out popped it in my mouth! It kept my mind off of the cigarette and my breath was always fresh mint. The only struggle was when I drank a beer......for me beer and cigarettes were like peanut butter and jelly, they go together! I drink beer 1 or 2 days a week so I cut it back to 1 day or none. Eventually I learned to drink without the cig craving......I don't even think of cigs. when I drink now. Being around friends and family that drink and smoke does not bother me. My wife smokes but outside only and not in my truck! Cigarette smoke 1st thing in the morning stinks the worst. I struggled with quitting and when I finally got it in my head that cigarettes didn't rule me I succeeded and Tic-Tacs helped. I don't know what it will take for you to quit but it's a worthy goal! Keep thinking about a real nice boat! Good luck.

I quit cold turkey.
I had a grandmother and aunt who smoked (others in family too). Crazy at it seems, the only memories I can recall easy are the ones at the end. They both had emphazema (sp) and all i recall is the heavy breathing and oxygen tank/tube they always had to have to breathe. I decided that is not the memory I wanted my kids or grandkids to have of me, so I smoked my last cigarrete Dec 31 1999. So I'm getting close to that 10 year mark.

smoked for 50 years. Was smoking 2 to 3 packs a day. Never quit coughing. Used the commit lozenges. Quit coughing in two days. Money saved is buying a motor home. But it is very hard. I could smoke a pack and never let one go out and it has been over four years. Johnny

I smoked for 25 years and wanted to quit but never could ...... until I had a massive heart attack and quadruple bypass. I was a Single mom and My daughter was 11 years old at the time and had to watch the paramedics bring me back to life. She had called 911. They told me I wouldn't live to watch her grow up if I picked up another one ....... she's 21 and in college now ...... and I'm too chicken to see if they were just trying to scare me!
