Hi im new to the site and i hope im not breaking any rules by posting here. But anyways i have a few questions.
My cousins an i are planning a trip to corpus to do some fishing, we're from san antonio,tx. I go every 3 months or so with my gf but we only catch 8"or 10"crokers. I want to catch something bigger.
We plan on fishing the rock pier behind the lexington (during the day) and the wood pier that is on the way to portland from corpus (during the night). My questions are: What kind of bait should we use? (live/dead/lure) Is there a better spot we should try fishing at? where can we catch our own bait? What should we be fishing for?

Never fished corpus, but speaking from a Galveston stand point, I like to use live mullet on a couple rods which you can easily catch with a castnet. Then fish another rod with popping cork and live shrimp or a lure. I would recommend targeting reds, specks, flounder, smacks, or if you want sharks. Disclaimer: ^thats all for beach fishing the surf in Galveston, use whatever applies lol

I don't think you will get anything big there by the lexinton unless you get really lucky. Indian point pier is good sometimes if the timing is right.
When are you going and what type of fishing equipment do you have? Length of rod and what lb test are you using (fishing line)?

we go to corpus often. i have heard that the fishing in the areas you mentioned are not very productive. we go by them on our way in and we never see anyone fishing there. the packery channel from what i have heard is great. we fish at bob hall pier as it is safe for us seniors lol and handicap accessible. we catch lots of big fish there. we catch spanish mackeral over 20 inches redfish black drum pompano all kinds of fish, i am now spoiled for corpus. teh water is beautiful. galveston can only dream about water that pretty. if the prices at the piers in galveston change we may consider coming back but for right now what it costs me to fish in galveston it is cheaper for us to go to corpus. the piers there are so much cheaper. i can pay 6 dollars for myself husband 8 rods and a cast net. instead of 24 dollars at galveston. so i put the other 20 in gas and we are off. catch lots of fish

That will do you good for salt water. Probably like a 1.5-3oz sinker. I hear the bull reds are in the surf right now so you guys might have better luck in Corpus south of bob hall pier or the Packery Channel jetties.
Visit corpusfishing for better reports in that area.

We are heading out Saturday morning to go surf fishing in/near mustang island. But I thought of a couple more questions. Should we be fishing towards the ocean or towards corpus? Some one explain to me what the guts were,(i had no idea), my question is and i might be dump but is there like a approximent distance to the 1st 2nd or 3rd gut? And can you make a fire while on the beach at night?

the layout of the beach is in constant change. there is never a set distance. the 3rd gut is pretty far out there sometimes it is impossible to wade out there without swimming due to the 2nd gut being over 6' and most people wont recommend swimming out there due to currents. if you have a decent surf setup you can cast into the 2nd gut from the beach. if not then the easiest thing to do weather permitting is wade out through the wade gut onto the first bar and fire it out from there or wade out even farther and get it out there. the bars are where the waves crest and break(easiest way to see the bars when its not all churned up is get up on the dunes and look out over the gulf. darker is the gut and deeper water, lighter is a shallow bar)it is getting pretty chilly out there so unless you have a wetsuit or chest waders its gonna be cold when your wet. id say the water is lower 70's right now so that isnt terrible.

Thanks for the info everyone. The trip was fun but not what i hoped for. We catch a lot of croaker and whities, some small trout, a puffer, some scorpion fish (i thik thats what they were), 3' eel, and small catfish. Nothing big like i hoped for.
We tried north padre island but the waves were to big and strong. We each went in waste deep and casted. I through out my entire spool so the walk back i was dragging my line. and worst of all my lil cousin through in the air and the wind blow his line and cross us all. my line popped and the other had to cut there line so left. Next we went to parktry channel were we caught a flonder and some perch. Nothing big besides the flonder so we left. Next we when to the boat docks in corpus to buy shrimp and fish. That where we caught the eel. Lastly we ended up fishing at indian point.
