Yeah, but it's the same beverage. If they call it "beer" in every other state, and "Malt Liquor" or "Ale" in Texas, it's still beer.

In fact, plenty of Microbreweries simply add a small addendum to their labels that simply says "Ale In Texas".

Frankly, though, ALL beer is either Ale, Or Lager. That's it, those are the two types that ALL beer eventually boils down too, depending on how it's brewed.

There is plenty of beer available in Texas that's well over 5%, and its all either an ale, or a lager anyway. They just have to say as much on the label lol.

Central Market has a great selection of Microbrew beer, plenty of stuff in the 8-12% range.

Shiner Hefe at 5.4 isn't that high lol, though it's already higher then it should be for a "True" hefeweizen. Tasty, though.

It's a good beer, but there are a lot of other Belgian Ales that I like even more. ( Some of which are more like 10-12% too hehe. )

I like beer.

I had one last night that was 14 or so (the last of the Canadian Imperial Stouts, Justin).

amazing.

TO help people:

there is nothing about color that makes the abv of beer different, it all comes down to how much sugar (be it from barley, corn, rice, cane, or once, in my back yard, carrots) is in it before the yeast go to work.

Many of our light beers have a little less than their standard counterparts.

Guinness is one of the lowest ABV beers available in Texas.

There are many charts available online that cover the abv of major breweries.

5.4 is way too high for a hefe, they should be 3.5-4 or so.

also also, Justin is right about the only 2 basic styles of beer.

Ales and Lagers.

Everything falls under that.

TABC and other state regulatory groups do weird thing to labeling.

the 3.2 OK beer law is a bit of a myth. That comes out to 4.0 ABV (4.0 is what a lot of big brewery beer is already).

In liquor stores, any beer can be bought in OK if it is distributed there. Note as well, 5.0 ABV is withheld as the limit in many cities in Texas, so things are not as different as you think.

Beer is an amazing beverage with a great history, and for some reason a ton of myths, half truths, and often simple lies surrounding it.

If that's all you're looking for, you're probably better off spending just a little more, and getting the cheapest liquor you can.
