My father in law has bass dying in his pond. The bass are the only fish dying thus far. What could be the problem? Not enought to eat, overcrowding, stress from the drought? Any info would be helpful.

Where is his pond? Is it full or low level water? It could be algae if the levels are low..or low oxygen content if not enough vegetation for the population.

Low oxygen levels or harmful vegetation. Has there been any foreign fish introduced lately? I'd get the ph tested and make sure there is plenty of cover to block the sun and if possible, a fountain of some sort to circulate the water. Run-off from pesticides could have a harmful effect too, but who knows...could be a new bass flew, lol. SOmeone used chicken liver from a bird flu-infected chicken and it's mutated into bass flu, lol. But seriously, TPWD might be able to help you. Find your local representative and get 'er dun.

The pond is in east texas, south of kilgore. No foreign fish from other lakes or ponds, but the pond really went down due to the lack of rain. Also forgot to mention that he cut down an old oak tree that fell in the pond. Could that have an effect? I told him to contact the TPWD but he has yet to do so. Thanks for your response guys.

A pond will "turn over" every few years. It will kill all the fish. You can pump it down and clean the muck off the bottom. This has happened to me 2 times in the last 5 years. I lost all my fish. It is enough to make you sick. The last was 2 weeks ago. I had seen a koenders arearation windmill in action down the road. The guy says it works great and has not lost a single fish in the last 4 years he has had it. I ordered one, it will be here next week. I will see how it works for me. It is very impressive to see how much air it produces. It is like a huge aquaium.

That link I provided above, was the one I bought. You can google it and come with all kinds of info. This just happen to be the best price I found, however it did not give much info. I already knew what I was going to buy so that did not mater. There was one other that was even a better price ( http://www.solar-stream.com/index.htm ) however they did not return my call in time.

I have small pond that I feed heavily, in order to keep oxygen levels adequate and reduce anaerobic conditions on the bottom, I built a small aeration/mixer unit out of pvc, 1/4 hp motor and smog pump. If anaerobic zone gets too large, I feed a biostimulant. This has work very well for me for past 3 years with no fish loss even at low pond levels.
