Nitro: Those mud holes are long gone, and some of that fantastic fishing is also regretably. It's still a great lake to fish, just the heaven part. More back down to earth type fishing now.
I remember those days, and I think there may still be some 4X4 buried back there rusting away. Those were some mud holes not for the faint of heart!

Gonz...I agree with Jimbo, If you don't have a castnet, get one. They're a must at Calaveras, plus your bait is free. Shad, perch, and tilapia is the way to go. Oh, put several rodholders on that boat of yours. You can never have too many. I have more then one rod at the bottom of Calaveras, I learned the hard way. Thought I could be fast enough to catch it if I had a bite...wrong!

well, I ended up goin out thursday morning ahead of that cold front. I went over near some reeds to net some shad. I saw a bass busting up on some baitfish so I grabbed a rod rigged with a crankbait and chunked it over there. BAM! landed a bass. Cast again, bam! another bass! Caught 6 in 7 casts then Waddy calls from the launch to come get him. I went and got him and told him the story so we headed back to the spot and for about 2 hours caught bass after bass after bass. I would say well over 40. They weren't the biggest 1-2 pounds, but they were extremely aggressive and built like footballs. About 1230 we got out of there due to the high winds, but it was a fun morning. cheers

I noticed those bass a couple weeks ago. Caught about five casting shad under a cork. All about 2# and looking like footballs.
I hope this is a sign that the black bass fishery is on the rebound. They obviously have plenty to eat.
I think the TPWD bass stockings, have been neglected for too long on both Calaveras and Braunig.
