I am also interested in the 2011 Humminbirds that will include down imaging along with Sonar and GPS. It is a great disadvantage to not have the side imaging to go along with the down imaging? How often do you use down imaging compared to side imaging? The coming out prices are attractive.

I think your best bet will be hb or lowrance. I would go play with the displays at bps. I would wait till the 2011 models drop becuase your price range models will have down imaging included. I own both brands and the hb is best for me. As far as settings there is not a set it and leave it number. Too many variables. I change mine every trip out. If your not gonna get the max performance out of your unit and just leave it at one setting i would get a basic eagle unit that works just fine and put the extra money to some other toys. Thanks for the info, HB is getting a lot of mention. I want to get as much capability as possible for the money. I've noticed lake fishing requires much more adaptability from a fisherman. I would rather have a unit with more capability than I use versus a unit with less than I need. A trip to BPS is in the making but will wait for new models. I will contact BPS for new unit arrival date.

I have a lowrance 522C as for now i do not want to spend the $$ on upgrading to a HD. However, I fished with a guy that had a Lowrance hd with side imaging. It was truly amazing what you could see. If you can afford it, I would recommend the Lowrance HD or HB side imaging. If not check the classifieds, you can get a good deal on good units as people upgrade.

Tgravely that is what Jason recommends it works for me but it is just a starting place. I had an eagle that you has to turn senstivity down to 50 or it was constant fish. Johnny

Willow, you can set the greyline on a black and white lowrance and see the difference between cats and scaley fish. A color lowrance is even easier. My new HDS 7 will be in later next week. I will show ya how and what to look for on lake waco whenever you can meet up. If nothing else it will give ya an idea of its capabilities. I have personally had bad luck with HB products, but that was several years ago. I am sure they have came a long way since, but I will not go away from lowrance unless forced to.

OK... Hauler you talked me into it. When the new one comes in I want to see it in action. I want to thank everybody for all the info and I think a trip to BPS is next and play with the different Lowrances and HBs. I'm going to drift fish "blind" tomorrow but I'm used to that!

Trees ... Water is 33' deep on left side, 47 on the right. That is a ball of shad and the white marks on the bottom left are catfish... I know, Because I caught a ton of them here..
