I havent fished coleto in quite some time even though it is only about an hour from my house, I always go to Falcon these days. But, I have been wanting to go fish coleto lately. Coleto can be a fun little lake and it is also visually pleasing.

The last time I fished Coleto was at a tourny, and the fishing wasnt too bad. The bass on Coleto pretty much hold to the same patterns year round, just sometimes they are more active than others. Topwaters, shallow crankbaits and lipless cranks, and weightless plastics such as a senko will usually get the job done.

However, the hard part about this lake is finding the bigger fish. I dont know why this lake is not loaded with 8 lbers. It doesnt get much pressure, has warm water, and lots of cover and forage. Yet, it is very hard to catch fish over 4 and 5 lbs on a regular basis. Several yrs ago, the avg catch seemed a little more solid; but I definately saw a decrease the past several years. I dont fish it much now, but I used to fish Coleto at least once a month, but stopped because the other lakes down here seem to have much better fish. I even catch bigger bass at Mathis!

All and all though, Coleto is a fun lake and you should catch a lot of fish. Just fish the hydrilla and try to figure out what pattern works best. I would concentrate your eforts in 4-8 foot of water and target areas of reeds and bean stalks within the hydrilla beds. Also, push back into some of the small creeks and see if bass are pushing bait fish up into them. They should be doing this. The bass will group up according to size, so move if your first couple seem to be small, unless you dont care!

Good Luck!

I remember back in when i was in high school fishing coleto we could always catch some 5's and 6's. I havent caught a decent fish out of there in a long time. I agree that the quantity is great for smaller fish recently. We had a club tournament back in April there and the big fish for the day was only a 6lber.
