I've only used a large aquarium net, but this is the basic design of a real kick screen net.

You've seen this any wedding and can get it at any craft store: http://www.tullesource.com/white-tulle.html. Cheap, very light, squishes down and shoves into a pocket really easy.

I made a sort of glove, like a slip-on racket cover, for my landing net out of it.

A simple qualitative sample can be achieved by simply picking up and turning over rocks in riffle habitat and using tweezer or forceps to put the inverts into a vial w/ 70% Ethanol of 40% Isopropyl Alcohol.

If you want to sample, collect, and process a benthic invertebrate assemblage according to TCEQ Surface Water Quality Monitoring Procedures you will need a D-Frame Kick net with 500 micron mesh size. Follow the procedures outlined in Chapter 5.

I would highly recommend a Identification Guide as well. We commonly use the Invertebrate ID Bible, known as An Introduction to the Aquatic Insects of North America by Merritt and Cummins.

Hope that helps.

The Quick Seine attaches to the yoke of your net and stores away in its handy little pouch.

Pretty cool tool.
