I just bought a new bass pro catmaxx reel and unsure of how to properly use the bait clicker. After you cast do you press the cast button and leave the reel in free spool with the clicker on? I was expecting to be able to just crank the handle and engage the reel after I hear the fish pulling out line, but I guess you have to manually turn off the clicker by flipping the lever and then you can set the hook. Can anyone who uses bait clickers help clarify this?

I don't have a Catmaxx, but I have half a dozen 6500 C3 reels by ABU that have clickers.
Set it like you said, press the spool release and set the clicker.
To set the hook, just turn the handle until the spool engages and set. If you are using the circle hooks like I saw you mention above, just engage the reel and allow the fish to set the hook. Trying to set the hook with a circle hook will just cause you to miss the fish.
As far as I know, most bait casting reels are about the same as far as how to engage the spool. Turning off the clicker isn't required unless the noise annoys you.

Duck whatever you do, remember to engage that spool before you try to sit the hook or your going to have a birds nest to out do all birds nests.

No matter who it is, they ALWAYS forget the first couple of times. You can tell them over and over but when that reel starts singing, they jump up and jerk that thing like it's going out of style. Then they look at you like "oops". hehe

I have asked this question before on another site but want to ask it agin. I have 4 Catmaxx reels and the baitclicker on 3 is real loud and on the other one you can hardly hear it.I have taken it apart and cleaned all the parts but no change. Any suggestions?

If the reel is not really old, exchange it for a new one.
I just bought two 6500 C3 classics and their bait clickers are harder to pull over than the other C3s I have, so I might exchange them for the silver ones. The rod bends about 3 inches before the clicker starts. This is an All Star Classic 6'6" 10-20 medium heavy.

The reels are not very old but to old to return. Next time I go to Bass Pro I will take it to the repair shop and see if they can turn up the volume.
