I know I am probably getting ready to open up a can of worms here..but? My son has a F350 6.0..he is constatntly working on it..over a month he has had thermostat issues, and had to purge the system..oil cooler went out, and now the power steering pump went out..he is always poking fun at me because he says my 5.9 Cummins sounds like a tractor...but...I dont have to work on it..no problems...I know all vehicles have their issues..but do these 6.0 powerstrokes cause alot of problems..or has this one just decided to act up? 05 Model

I won't argue which is the better truck but the 5.9L is a better engine, no doubt.
From what I gather, the 6.0L has two major flaws. One, the egr valve tends to clog with excessive idling or on people that just "putt around". The egr cooler overheats and fails spilling coolant into the engine and blows the head gaskets. Two, there seems to be an excessive amount of casting sand in the coolant (some claim the coolant itself causes the problem). This causes the oil cooler to clog and either overheats the engine, causing coolant puking or causes complete failure which also takes out the egr cooler and head gaskets.
I never idle except at a stop light and I run a fuel additive. My egr valve is clean. I've checked. I also added a coolant filter to trap all the crud that would stop up the oil cooler. Hopefully, these few preventative measures will pay off in the long run but I'm pushing 50k, run a tune and I haven't had many problems with my truck at all.

as long as were talking 5.9, heck of an engine...now as soon as you start talking 6.7 (cummins) that is a whole new ball game!
If a fellow would drop a 5.9 Cummins in a Ford truck, you'd have something

I have the 05 6.0 and although I love this truck it has given me some motor problems. Here recently my altenator was going out which in turn caused my Fuel Injection Control Module to fry and had to replace that and my altenator....

the 6.0 is a poor engine, period.
everyone i know that owns one has problems with theirs.
the 5.9 cummins is a great engine.....problem is they put it into a dodge.
i'm gonna hold on to my 7.3 like there is no tommorow.....i think we've seen the last of the real diesels for awhile.
i've heard real good things about the 6.7 liter ford though.

The 6.0 has an extremely bad history of problems I do know a few people that has good luck with them but is rare. You gotta Love them or hate them I agree the 7.3 was a great engine though. As far as giving you a hard time about your cummins sounding like a tractor I think a straight piped cummins sounds very nice. Anything you want to know about the powerstroke can be found at the link below. They also have sister forums for the cummins and the duramax. http://www.powerstroke.org/

I drive a 6.7 cummins and love it so far. The only problems I have heard of with them are Emmisions related, usualy people not using it for what it is made for and babbying it around town and idling too much.
My cousin has several 6.0 fords and hasnt had any problems with them. He runs a shop and does custom bailing and uses these trucks hard and puts alot of miles on them.

hate to say it, but if i was going to buy a new diesel today, i would get the new crew cab dodge 2500 cummins.
then take it straight to the shop and get the DPF delete done and get rid of all that emmisions [censored].
the 6.4 is a decent running truck if you do the same thing to it as well.
I am really impressed with the look and interior of the 2010 dodge.

Delete the egr, change the coolant and get a coolant filter and its every bit as reliable as the 7.3l. Put on head studs if you're really paranoid.

I've owned a 2004 dodge cummins with auto trans since new. 192,000 miles with fluid changes only. Never has been worked on. The older ones are tough. It's pulled all kinds of heavy loads including a 36' Alfa fifthwheel. Runs as good as new!

No chip or tune. Change fluids regular. Everything including antifreeze per Dodge recommendations. I also pull a 30" stock trailer out here. Having said that, It will probably blow up tomorrow.

I assume you don't have a chip or a tune on it I have an 01 with an auto that has 340,000 miles the AUTO tranny has been rebuilt 1 time (prob would have put a couple of clutches in a stick by now let alone the fifth gear backing off issues) This truck has spent most of its life pulling a 50 ft transport that weighs 7000 pounds empty and up to 22,000 pounds loaded excluding the weight of the pickup another 7000 pounds The pickup also has as many hours of ideling as it does going down the road and is chipped and piped. This pickup replaced a 95 3500 cummins (auto trans) that now has over 500,000 miles pulled the same trailer and was turned up very hot and has never been apart in any way Both of these pickups to this day still have the origional factory nongreaseable ujoints in them.
