So, as of this past Friday, my tailgate decides it does not want to open. I removed the 3 bolts on the inside of the tailgate, removed the bezel (cover) and discover that the problem is a plastic retaining clip between the latch assembly and the rod is broken. I have not gone to a parts store yet, but checking online at O'Reilly's and Autozone, it looks like (based on their pictures) that I would have to puchase a new latch. I don't really need the latch, it releases and locks fine, all I need is the plastic retainer that holds the release rod in place. Any suggestions or ideas on how to get around purchasing the latch assm or connecting the rod to the latch so it stays in place? If all else fails, I will go ahead and spend the $32 for the latch assm but it really irks me to have to spend $32 when it's a little $1 part that I need. Thx

Mine broke a few years ago and I got creative with zip ties to hold the rod in place. I'm thinking that when slamming the tailgate w/o holding the handle is when they break.

Mine broke several years back. I used craft wire and wrapped it in to position.

Remember the color the clip is and go to the stealership and purchase one for between $3 and $6. Then try to install everything without breaking the bezel. I'm guessing you have between a '99 and '07 pickup. Then start looking around at similar p/u's and see how many are missing the bezel and the clip on the passenger side.
