We got back from Falcon last night. Just got my dad on a plane back to Illinois, and now its time to sit back and wait for my next trip down to Zapata.
We pulled in Zapata on Thurs evening, visited with the boys at FLT then called Amanda at Sunset Cove Villa. We met her at the Churchs Fried Chicken and headed to the house. It is a nice place on the lake. It is a three bedroom, one bath with a garage below. It has a full kitchen with a dining area, a flat screen and direct tv in living room and all bedrooms. It was clean and very comfortable for 3 guys. We used their pit to grill every night, and would back the boat in the garage. The garage is not big enough for a 20 ft or larger boat so we would back it in as far as it would go and lower the door as far as we could. I will stay there again. The ramp and boat dock at the rental is not useable.

For the fishing, we were so excited to get on the lake Friday morning we put the boat in the water and forgot to put gas in it. We had a little less than 1/2 tank so we just decided to stay around the Veleno and fish. We ended up with 57 fish, nothing over 5 lbs.

Saturday with two full tanks we headed towards Pierce's and started fishing main lake points from Pierce's down to Tigers. As we were fishing our way back the over heat alarm came on, and water pressure went down some. We headed in early to figure what was going on. We ended up with 27 fish, we had 5 6 lb fish, but nothing over. We figured the impeller was going out, so we stopped by FLT, they had one, we were going to change it, but on Evinrude have to unhook the linkage, so decided not to. None of us wanted to risk messing something up even more. A thanks to FLT guys for letting us borrow tools and calling their boat mechanic friend to help us out over the phone. May have really saved us from screwing something up.

Our game plan for the rest of the week then changed. We were limited to the Veleno. We fished there Sun (29 fish, two 6 lb fish), Mon (26 fish, one 5 lb fish), Tues (34 fish, three 6 lb fish).

On Wed we only fished till 11 am before heading back to Austin. We had 18 fish, 5 lb the biggest. We were heading down the bank fishing around 10:30 and a 10 lb plus fish comes out of the water about 8 ft from the boat with what we guessed was a tilapia hanging out of its mouth the size of a dinner plate. Then it did it again, it was crazy. I've caught quite a few 10+ fish and my wife a 13 down on Falcon, and this fish looked every bit as large as her 13. We stuck around to make sure the fish was choking and it didn't need us to pull the "tilapia" out, but it never surfaced again. We were definately in awe.

Overall I felt we had a great trip. I wish we would have been able to get out of the Veleno and fish more areas, but I guess that's how a boat will do you sometimes. We fished the mag fluke wat/magic, u vibe wat/candy, multiple 10" worms any wat. It seemed dipping the tails in chart. made quite a difference on this trip. We fished 10-18 ft of water and concentrated on any type of point. I was a little disappointed on the size of the fish on this trip (nothing over 8 like I'm used to), but I guess Falcon can spoil you.

As far as safety, of course we felt safe confined to Veleno for the most of the trip, but the day we were able to run the lake we saw numerous Border Patrol, and the Coast Guard had the copter flying. We talked to Border Patrol at the ramp and they are staying until Sat or Tues. After they leave the Coast Guard is taking over for 10 days. They said after those 10 days are up, the patrol on the lake will go back to like it was before the incident.

Sorry for long report.

Thanks for the report. I'll be down the 24-28 of November. Haven't been down in close to six months and I can't wait to be back.
