About 4ft long, and would not give ground until I slapped him across the head with my fishing pole, and only moved a little then. When I hit him again he went in the water and floated like a bobber. This pic was taken with my phone

That appears to be a western cottonmouth, AKA water mocassin! You are lucky it didn't go for you!

To all you misinformed fisherman,THAT is mr COTTONMOUTH sometimes he will appear black others times he will be darkish gray just remember his head is the shape of the ACE of spades and he floats. Nice post Mr.Crappieman.

Cottonmouth or Water Moccasin, same thing - have seen them a lot on Lewisville, usually on the water. They definitely can be aggressive.

There's a fine line between fishing and sitting on the water looking like a darn fool.

I've see plenty of water snakes on land. Pic is definitely a moccasin. Very stout bodied and the entire body floats where as a water snake only the head and a couple curves in the body will be out of the water.
