Let's say a little prayer in his passing! "Lord let all his offspring and all those like him experience the same fate. If we have to have snakes Lord, let them be without teeth and be 10 times more afraid of me than I am of them." That's the best I can do when it comes to snakes.

A good day fishing is not losing a jig, a bad day fishing is not losing a minnow!

Cottonmouths are the only snakes that really do freak me out. I think they are the only snake that will agressively go after you...in TX at least. I've encountered plenty of rattlers out in the wild and never had a problem. My dad was chased by a cottonmouth. A 410 put a stop to that. I've had them swim toward my kayak with that crazy look in their eyes. I really hate the bad reputation that snakes have. They have a very important role in the ecosystem but...cottonmouths freak me out still.

i let all non-poisonous snakes go on their way. this thing however, was too close to hunting area for my comfort.

You sure that is a cottonmouth? Just looking at those pics without a really good angle on the head, it sure looks like a big banded watersnake to me.

Just saying, and if it is a banded water snake, there sure isn't any good reason to kill it.

Judging from the body shape, coloration/markings and particularly the last photo, it appears to be a non-venomous diamondback water snake or banded water snake.

There are some really good snake identifiers on the TFF so maybe one will be along to confirm.

The belly scales give it away, Non-venomous. Rudy is right.

I couldn't tell until the last picture, and I'd bet a dollar it was a banded water snake, which by the way are also aggressive, but will only make you hurt your skivvies.

Damn right it's a Cotton Mouth, and a good one too! Good and Dead! I bet these folks will tell you that Cotton Mouths have a peculiar smell to them as well. I would describe it as faintly skunk like. If you are out and about and suddenly get a faint whiff of a skunk, you very likely just spooked a Cotton Mouth. Be Careful out there!
