Help!

I have read the forum paying close attention to what everyone has been saying about reels with a "bait clicker" system.

I have only the wire-type, spin casting reels. You know, the kind with the wire bail that you flip open before you cast.

I have carefully looked at all of my reels and don't have a bait clicker system on them. I looked at the reels at Walmart and couldn't find any (except one) that had a bait clicker system. Now, I do remember the old Zebco 33's that had this baitclicker system.

Can anyone help me out with a good reel that has this system? Reel prices that don't break my family bank would be greatly appreciated.

Once you answer this question, please help me with this one.

How in the world do you use this system???

Go to ebay and search for "roddy reel" look for a roddy 175 series. It has the baitclicker and it is a good reel. You should be able to pick them up for 30 to 35 dollars. To use the baitclicker feature you just push in the line release button and slide the clicker switch up, this will allow the line to freely come off the spool and the clicker will sound. You can set the tension on the side of the reel where you want it. When the clicker starts going off just turn the reel handle a little to lock the spool and then set the hook. Rednecktexan occasionally can get you a deal on these reels.

I do not know of any bait clickers on spinning outfits. All I have ever seen or used were baitcaters.

Andrew, I am sure there are likely some spinning reels with the clickers on them, but I don't personally use spinning reels.

The bait clicker Erich is speaking about on the Roddy Reels....You need to understand are bait casting reels. I agree with Erich on the cost versus quality, the Roddy 175 is a good reel.

In so far as how to use it.....If you set several reels out, you can leave the spool release engaged and set the clicker....This will allow the fish to move off with your bait without him noticing the drag of a bending rod, yet it will give you an audible indication when a fish begins taking that line out.

For example, if you are punch bait fishing, you can set out several rods with the bait clickers set, and you don't have to worry about a fish yanking the rig out of your boat when he hits you.

Go to Wal Mart and get you a Shakespeare Tidewater 30 ... they're about $35.00 .. big reel .. well made, heavy duty .. I have 6 of 'em and their baitclicker works great..and is one of the loudest clickers.. my striper guide buddy has Abu Garcias that ran him about $90.00 each and he prefers mine !

First, you need to understand the different types of reels. A spincast reel has the spool enclosed in a case with a button release such as a Zebco 33. A spinning reel has an exposed spool with a round bail wire that flips open. A baitcasting reel has an exposed horizontal spool such as an Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5600c4. Shakespeare makes a spincast reel called Synergy in small and large sizes with a baitclicker. The larger reel comes with 20 lb mono and can handle big cats but probably could not stand 50 lb or larger cats. Shimano makes a spinning reel with a baitclicker called a Baitrunner. I personally prefer baitcast reels but they take some practice to learn how to cast.

Seigrist,if your spincast reels have a rear drag system you can accomplish the same thing (baitclicker effect) by leaving the bail closed and loosen your drag off to the desired tension.

How about a good ol' fashioned Penn No. 09 reel? I have two of those set up on a pair of Shimano Bullwhip rods. Those run about 49 bucks, if I remember correctly. Bought them at Wal-Mart, but these are the pretty ones with the black handles. These reels have a baitclicker system....complete with instructions. Steve

Penn makes a Live Liner spinning reel which has a stray line function (bait clicker). The reel isn't cheap, but it's a great reel.

For baitcasting reels, the Ambassadeur 6000 C3 series is my choice for clicker style reels.

I have always liked Abu Garcia reels. I own a couple 6500's with clickers (one clicker doesn't work anymore - but that's OK - I pulled it out of Table Rock Lake in Missouri - mounted on a $15 cheapie rod).

I recently bought a Shakespeare SKP 2000 (Looks very, very similar to Abu) for $27 on Ebay - used and so far I am very impressed. It's clicker seems to be a little louder than the Abu's clicker.

I fish alone sometimes. When I use live bait, I always put the rods with clickers the farthest from me out to the sides (left and right) so that the clicker gets my attention while I watch the other rods.

The Zebco Rhino reels have a pretty good clicker system if you don't like baitcasters. I've got a couple of them for my kids to use for cats and stripers. (Otherwise they've got the standard Zebco 33's for panfish, etc.) I've got a friend that is a "once a year" fisherman who has used two of these for several years fishing for striper and they have stood up to some nice fish and still work well.
