I will be visiting New Braunfels the month of November and plan to drag my old jon boat out there to enjoy some local Texas fishing. It would be very helpful if anyone could share some information on what I might encounter fishing Lake Dunlap. Anything at all, places to launch, tackle used normally in November, bait, technique, etc. Found the GBRA sites and they are helpful, but there is nothing like local experience information
Have a daughter and family in New BraunfelsHusband works for McCoys Building Supply.

I wouldn't bother. But if you must grab some rattlesnakes. Beware of skiers...even in november

I have yet to fish Dunlap, and I live on Canyon Lake (next door to New Braunfels), but my fishing buddy (who is a guide) has been doing well on Dunlap. I don't know any spots, but fresh dead shad is the key, so take a cast net with you, but watch out for underwater logs (cast nets don't like to come back up once they've become emotionally attatched to logs...I've learned that the hard way!). Hope this helps. If you want to buy punch bait for channels, Big Marv's Cheesebait seems to be the most productive, I'm told. Steven

At Dunlap there's a free public ramp under the IH35 bridge at the river. Down by the dam, stay to your right (south). There's stumps on the left side (north).
McQueeny doesn't have any public access anymore, although I've heard of a ramp that's 4WD.
Placid has a public ramp under the IH10 bridge at the river too.
Good luck!

Thanks a million for all your help and advise. I found a 2008 posting that a castnet will get plenty of black tail shiners right on the ramp at I-35 launch. I don't have a castnet but do have a couple of net traps that may work but more time consuming.
On Canyon Lake, I was out there in April for a look-see. Scared the pants off since my ship is only a 14 ft flat boat. Will have to look for some protected coves and watch the wind direction.
I'm just looking for simple safe water and the Guadalupe looked like the best bet nearby, but I'm open to other locations within an hour of so of New Braunfels. Just don't no the country that well.

Look at Decker Lake in SE Austin too. Good Hybrid Striper action.

Rich_d, I have been wanting to fish Walter E. Long. I heard that the crappie fishing is good there as well. So it is dangerous to stay at night and fish? Has there been problems at that lake? If so I may try another lake.

You should ask the guys on the Austin Bass Fishing forum, in the whites, hybrid, striper section. They can probably give you better info. I've never stayed after dark, but I've read about problems they've had over there.
