My dad always told me that any cast that hit water was a good cast. Now he may have just been just trying to make me feel better with my 5' cast trying to learn to throw a bait caster.

This advice works in any situation good or bad... "Boy, Dont tell your momma!"

And the story goes like this.....

My uncle and I went fishing in a old pond by his house and as we showed up in his old truck he looks at me and says "if the fish wont bite dont worry I got a solution for that"... At age 8 I had no idea what I was about to witness??

Well sure enough the fish were not biting. So after about a hour of nothing "Uncle D" told me to stand by the truck and he opened the truck and grabbed a old fishing tackle box from behind the seat. He walked down to the edge of the pond and opened the box and grabbed something out the box and moved the box over a bit and stood up. He then looked at me and said "stay there and cover your ears"
Next I knew he took out a lighter from his pocket and lit something and threw it into the pond and ran like crazy to me by the truck. He said "hold your ears and watch the pond!"

!!BOOOOOOM!!

He looked at me and said "Boy, dont tell your momma"!

We racked up on a few floating catfish and went back home. And yes I kept my mouth shut cause that was the coolest thing I had ever seen why in the world would I tell!! Well...I did tell my dad when we were alone. My dad looked at me and once again I heard those simple words "Boy, dont tell your momma"!!

Best advice I ever heard!!!


BTW-the reason we probably didnt catch many fish was most of them were probably laying on the bottom DEAD!! I looked this up years ago and I found out most of this fish will sink instead of float because their swim bladder exploded!!!

This old man at work always says if the wind is coming out of the east, the fish will bite the least. If the wind is coming out of the west, the fish bite the best. He always has something weird to say.

My Grandma used to say that. Seemed to work alright.
