My wackiest catch (or perhaps I should say quackiest catch) happened today. As I cast a rattle trap towards the shore, a group of mallards took off. My lure wrapped around the head of one of them and the the treble hook came back and got under the line so that it acted like a noose. I "roped" that duck in a manner that would have made a rodeo cowboy proud. First time I have ever had a lure going towards the shore, then 20' over my head and then dive about 3 ft. underwater when I got him close to the boat.
What are some of your funny moments on the water? Larry

Had a similar experience at Rayburn some years back. My son and I were fishing topwaters along the edge of a brush line. We noticed this skinny brown bird with long legs and long sharp beak setting on a limb just ahead of us. As we got closer, the bird flew up, then landed on a limb just ahead of us. It repeated this scenario several times as we worked that edge, but each time letting us get a bit loser befor spooking. Finally we got about even with the bird and he was still perched on his limb. I launched a long cast with the Pop-R and about the same time the bird spooked once again. This time he hit my line as the Pop-R was still in the air, causing him to do acouple of flips, wrap his wing up in the line and crash in the water.
I retrieved the line/lure/bird back to the boat with much thrashing and squawking from the bird. When I got it to the boat, I grabbed the line and lifted the bird and lure into the boat. Immediately when it's feet hit the deck the bird got very quite and still, just looking at us.
All this time my son was in the front, laughing his a__ off. Finally he said, guess I shold help you get that bird unwound. He said "I'll grab the bird and you get the line unwound".
When he reached for the birs, it stabbed him in the back of the hand with that long, sharp beak, drawing blood --- my turn to laugh!
After wounding him, the bird was back to standing very quietly on the deck.
After a little thought, I grabbed a towel out of one of the lockers and through it over the bird, the my son grabbed him again. We got the line unwrapped from his wing and threw him in the air. He took off with several loud squawks.
Bet that bird doesn't let any boats get so close to him again.

Fishing a night tournament back in the 70's, throwing Jitterbugs on a dark of the moon night. Kept hearing the water sloshing behind my lure as I reeled back but no pressure. Cast back in the same place, same noise and no pressure. It was a good thing I didn't stop the retrieve for very long. My buddy turned on the flashlight and it was a coon chasing it but when the lure got over deeper water it would quit. That would have been a heck of a fight!

I was fishing on Lake Fork with a zaraspook and a Kingfisher thought it looked good enough to eat. He dived on it and got caught up in the line and flew off, until the line got tight and the spook hooked his wing. He put up a good fight in the air, water, and on the deck. Like C. said he drew blood quickly, then the spook came loose and off he went. I sure was glad, I wasn't looking forward to round 2 trying to get my spook back.

I think the wierdest thing I heard was a guy catching a cat this spring bedfishing. He was fishing a bed with a small male next to some reeds and the cat shot out and grabbed his tube when he overcast.

A friend and I were trolling mirrolures for trout down in Central Florida (near Cape Canaveral) when I felt a tug on my line. I started reeling in and as I looked back there was a pelican thrashing about on the water. My fishing partner said he saw the pelican dive from above directly down to the mirrolure. Pulled him all the way to the boat and in, but not without him putting up one hell of a fight. It was fun for awhile and I since have found out that it is not all that unusual. Glad, tho, that I had my friend aboard to assist in the dehooking. Those wings were flapping like crazy.

More of the same ---
I've got several similarly odd stories from my years in the bass boat posted on my web page.
Anyone interested with some time to spare can check them out here:

As incredible as some of these are; I can assure you that they are all completely true!

caught a young blue heron in the mouth on a minnow one night at the BLORA Fishing dock on Belton Lake. I was inside and my line made a lightning fast run under the dock and out into the main lake. I though I had a huge hybrid, I managed to get the bird back under the dock so it's now inside and not happy. After flopping around for a few minute he finally go tthe hook out and flew out the door.

Down at Rockport a few years back I watched a friend of mine beat bloody by a sea gull. He was chunking live shrimp and the sea gull caught it before it hit the water. I don't know who made more noise him or the bird! It was fun watching him reel that bird in. I would have just cut the line, that whooping he took was not worth it. LOL!
