We bought some of the DK bait. It looks better than some I've seen.....I'd heard so much about it here that I thought father-in-law would just have a ball with it. Fished at Hubbard - morning,mid-morning,day,mid-day, etc., till midnight. Tried the dam, rocks, stumps...all the familiar spots we caught fish (all kinds) at before. Using a treble hook, some without the sponge, some with; bait was not hot, kept in cool (not cold cooler), put hook in (shoved it down with a heavy duty plastic fork) and pulled it out at a 45 degree angle. Had a nice, non-dripping "plop" of goo........didn't catch a thing...but the ones using minnows caught catfish. Can anyone tell me what we did wrong? I know this stuff works, ya'll have talked too much about it (this is a WONDERFUL site, thank you!) Saw where Danny King had a website, but have been unable to access to read up...any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Tracker, I wouldn't say you did anything wrong? That is a good example why I always carry 2 baits. (Shad and DK's) Some days it just goes that way. Don't give up on it yet, it is a good bait.

Thank you so much for your words of wisdom. I know some spots on some days you can fill up your livewell and the next day at the same spot....nothing. Just wanted to be sure we were not missing a "key" to this bait. Thanks again!

Hey Tracker,
Maybe I'm doing something wrong, too. I've been using DK since April and I've used it on approximately 20 catfish trips since then. My typical setup is three rods...1 with DK, 1 with chicken liver and 1 with other commercial bait or cut bait. So far the chicken liver is ahead by a margin of 2 to 1. I don't have a boat (sucks), so maybe my results are different from the boat guys. My personal opinion is that it's the best commercial bait. I won't waste my money on the other commercial baits. Let me know if you find the missing piece of the puzzle.
regards,

Will do, Shotgun! One more thing I was going to ask the "pros" on here......after baiting the hook.......with no nibbles, fairly calm water.......the bait didn't seem to stay on the hook long........10-15 minutes maybe....I guess I sat there the first time about 30 minutes.....figured "Huh...better check"...pulled it up and it was naked! Rebaited, dropped down.......no bites......pulled up, naked again.....does this happen to you? Also, when you use it, do you use the sponges or just the bare hook?

Are you using a bobber on this stuff cause I can't feel alot of the bites if it's right on bottom. Try a slip bobber setup and see what happens. Cause it should not just melt off your hook. Although it does depend on what type water your fishing in lake, river etc.... Now after about five or ten minutes with no bite I always reload anyways.

Tracker I agree with Jerry, I fished Hubbard this past Sunday and had Shad, DK and cut bait. All of the catfish I caught were on the cut bait. You just have to be in the right place at the right time. Good luck!!!

Deadeye - no bobber, just tight line. Line on hook about 6 inches, then the weight. Drop it all the way to the bottom and pull up a couple of turns, kinda work the rod to be sure I'm not sitting right on the bottom. Water fairly calm (Hubbard), unless there was some kind of underwater stream, but doubt that one. Tried a sponge, it seem to hold it on better....nevertheless, I have the patience of Jobe.........been known to sit for hours and not catch a thing...just something about being out on the lake is just plain relaxing.....AAAAAHHHHHH...course catching fish is nice, too. That's a big "I agree" on the reload (freshness).....but will try a bobber next time too! Thanks again!

Hey tracker,
I may be heading out there tomorrow and I know for a fact where we can catch some cats using it.....now they aren't blues but they are still cats. If you think you might be able to make it out there tomorrow night (Thursday) then let me know tonight or tomorrow afternoon and I will show you how to use the stuff. I will be fishing from about seven untill a little after dark.....probably around ten or so.

WOW! That is SO nice of you! Thank you SO much! Unfortunately I try not to fish during the week, makes getting up at 4:30 AM to go to work kinda hard.....especially if the fish are really biting.....just can't hardly pull me off the lake.....BUT, where do you put in at? Oh yeah, didn't want js to think I didn't read his posting and was leaving him out.......I read everything! Never too old to learn something new!

Tracker, if you are fishing straight over the side as you say and maybe a turn or two off the bottom, I might ask what kind of weight you are using?

This year I have gone to extra fast tip rods, and started using split shots for weight if I'm fishing straight down and can't cast out.

I've encountered situation when fishing the method you are fishing, the fish seem to go to zero bouyancy and can suck a hook clean without you ever feeling a thing.

Unless there is something wrong with your Danny King's punch bait, I can almost guarantee it ain't washing off. If it will make a ball solid enough to not drip as you pull it out of your bait bucket, it ain't going to wash off no hooks. I been using punch bait for 12 years now and I can't ever remember it washing off my hooks??? And, I don't use no stinking sponges. Of course in the hot part of the summer, I carry two gallons of punch bait and keep one gallon in the ice chest at all times to keep it firm. Darn cheese will get runny on you!!

But, I've found that by going to a Medium (instead of my traditional Medium Heavy) 7' BPS Crankin Stick, or this new custom built E-Glass rod I have, the tips are flat out too soft for a kitty to get by not moving the tip just a wee bit! If he ever does, I got him!

But, I have caught a bunch of kitties on Ray Roberts using medium heavy crankin sticks in heavy brush that you flat out had to spend the whole day easing your rod up and down feeling for that one moment the rod tip feels just a wee bit heavier than the last time you moved it up and down.

Just my two cents.

listen to MikeC, hes smarter than the average bear I guarantee ya. I ve been recently converted to DK punchbait. I love it. I dont use hardly anything else anymore (havent had too) Once I finally just decided to go out and use the dang stuff it didnt take long for me to love it. in the last month (thats about all ive been using it) Ive probably caught, on 1 morning a week fishing trips to cedar creek, over 100 cats. at least. i know i caught 30 last time out in the middle of the day. You just got to hang with it and gain confidance in it just like any other bait. It works, works damn good. It does get greasy when it gets hot and I fling it all over the place but it still works. Ive been fishing the shallows under shaded areas in the midday is killin em lately.i like to use a slip bobber about 1-2 feet under the surface. And I cast alot, I dont leave it in the water very long with a bobber, usually dont have to. but if I dont get a bite i cast it again to some more cover. its in the water i would say at the very most 5 minutes at a time before I re-cast. and 5 minutes is REALLY pushing it. I got the patience of a 3 year old, its amazing that i can catfish at all. Man I hope this made some sense, if it didnt at least listen to MikeC.

The only Danny King's bait that I have bought was some cheese flavored at a bait shop on Conroe just last week.

I had read about how effective it was on the forum so I thought I would try it out.

It was runny and I had a hard time keeping it on the hook when casting.

I will attest that if you can get it to stay on the hook it works but it is hard to get it to stay on the hook.

Above it is mentioned that the cheese is runny, I suppose I should try a diffrent flavor. The cheese is all that they had on the shelf.

What is the preferred flavor?
