Has anyone had any success with this on throw lines, trotlines or juglines?

If you want a catfish drawing concoction...try cod liver oil with asaphoetida in it.
Get a big lump or two of asaphoetida and heat it in a pan with about a pint or so of cod liver oil. Do this outside, no exceptions.
When it is dissolved as much as possible, bottle or jar it and use it to dip cut bait or any other type of bait. It can be mixed with dip or other baits.
I used to make this bait and it is a powerful attractant for catfish.

I have had decent luck with during the warmer months. The warmer water will allow the fat in the soap to "bleed". It is no where near as good as shad though.

I have used it and caught fish on it. It is a very cheap way to go. One bar can be cut into about 75 little cubes and the bar is about .68 cents. Hard to beat the price but it has some disadvantages. It comes off the hook easily. Not like chicken liver but it does come off. I also don't think it a preferred taste for the cats either. I have used it in areas where the fish were starving and they hit well. I tried it in a stock pond where the fish were fed weekly. I couldn't get them to bite at all. I changed it for some pork liver from a wild hog and caught fish within 30 minutes. I don't waste my time with it anymore.

Chuckwagon, you may have revealed what I'm doing wrong with the asaphoetida. I bought it in powdered form, and just dumped it into a gallon of punch bait and stirred it up. Then I fished it side by side with another gallon of the same exact bait, and caught fish equally as well on both?? In other words I just wasn't real impressed with the stuff. But, the boiling it down into a liquid might be the secret. Guess I will give it a try. With my gas mask on.

zote used to be sold at HEB, but Rednecks is what i carry now. I always have three or four bars around. It honestly does out fish alot of my baits that i use on the guadalupe River and is far more convient than catching 50 to 75 pieces of bait. I still use perch on Yella lines but for channels and blues...it's honestly hard for me to give up what works. Rednecks soap

That is hilarious...........what do rednecks put in their soap. No, I have heard tha this stuff works pretty good. My problem is that I target yella cats and everything else are just a bonus. Bait is a big pain and the toughest part of yella cat fishing. I guess that is one of the challenges that makes fishing for them fun. If I were a bluecat man I would fish for goos or carp and use them as cutbait. Fresh shad work great too but they won't stay on the hook like good old goo.

I fished it in the dead of winter with ice around the edges of two 10 acre lakes and caught catfish galore. I used shrimp dipped in the concoction. All bait was gone or fish on. Several of the set poles were pulled out of the bank. Chuckwagon

Catfishjojo, asaphoetida is also known as, "Devils Dung"....Believe it or not, folks from India use it as an antacid to calm the effects of too much Curry on your chicken. You can also buy it at a food store that specializes in catering to folks from India.

IF YOU REALLY WANT TO GET DIRTY AN STINKY, YOU CAN BUY CHICKEN BLOOD FROM PILGRUMS PRIDE IN DALLAS YOU HAVE TO BUY A 5 GAL BUCKET MIN. HAVE NOT BOUGHT ANY IN A LONG TIME BUT ITS GOOD FOR MAKING YOUR OWN BLOOD BAIT (its half liquid an half jelled plasma) OR TO SOAK SHRIMP IN, IT WAS $15-5 gal. BRING YOUR OWN BUCKET ...gona look into the "asa" stuff myself thanks for the imfo..had a friend that was a hillbilly that fished (hoop netts an trot lines)on the quachita river in ark.he lives on the river in a house boat an does this for a livin an he swore by just plain old cheap bar soap, just like you buy for your shower at home go figure but it works

Thanks for the info. This thread got my curiousity up because my son and his friends have been on a mission to make the perfect catfish bait. They tried zote for what it is worth and I guess either they missed the bite or the fish just weren't hungry enough. Looks like there is an alternate spelling used a bit more on the internet for the spice everyone is referencing (asafoetida). It is an ingredient in curry. I had good luck last year chumming with some left over curried rice one afternoon. Maybe not just a coincidence. Asafoetida is in the same family as anise. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asafoetida
